New Holland 3074 – ECU: Injector Solenoid Valve Cylinder 6 Source Low

Issue description

The Engine Control Unit (ECU) has detected an abnormally low voltage or a short to ground in the electrical circuit for the fuel injector solenoid on cylinder number six. This 'Source Low' condition disrupts the precise electrical pulse required to activate the injector, preventing it from firing correctly. This failure affects the proper operation of the fuel injection system for that cylinder and can lead to symptoms such as a rough running engine, misfires, excessive smoke, and a noticeable loss of power.

Applies to these machines

  • T6
  • T7
  • T8
  • T9
  • CR8.80
  • CR9.80
  • TM115
  • TM165
  • TV140
  • 8160
  • 8260
  • 8360
  • 8560
  • T9.480
  • T7.165
  • T7.270

Check the cause

  1. Visually inspect the wiring harness leading to the cylinder 6 injector for chafing, melting, pinched wires, or damage where it might rub against the engine block or other components.

  2. Disconnect the electrical connector at the cylinder 6 fuel injector and inspect the pins on both the injector and the connector for corrosion, moisture (green residue), or bent/damaged pins. Clean with a suitable contact cleaner if necessary.

  3. Check for voltage at the connector: Turn the key to 'ON' (engine off), connect the negative probe to a good ground, and probe the harness connector pins with the positive probe to ensure one wire has constant voltage (typically 12V). If no voltage is present, there is an issue in the power supply wire.

  4. Test the injector solenoid resistance: With the harness disconnected, measure resistance across the two pins on the injector itself (typically 0.2 to 1.0 Ohms for Bosch common rail). A reading of 'OL' indicates an open circuit, while zero indicates a short. Compare this reading with an adjacent, functioning injector (e.g., cylinder 5); readings should be nearly identical.

  5. Check for a short to ground: Probe each of the two wires in the disconnected injector harness connector to a good engine ground. The reading should be 'OL' (open line). Continuity or low resistance indicates a short to ground in the harness.

  6. Check for ECU pulse: Connect a Noid light to the injector harness connector for cylinder 6 and crank the engine to verify the ECU is sending a flashing pulse signal. If it does not flash (and power supply is confirmed), there is likely a break in the control wire or a faulty ECU injector driver.

Repair steps

  1. Repair wiring harness

If visual inspection or electrical testing reveals damaged wiring, lack of voltage, or a short to ground, repair or replace the affected section of the injector wiring harness.

  2. Replace fuel injector

If the injector solenoid resistance is out of specification (open, shorted, or incorrect resistance compared to a good cylinder), replace the cylinder 6 fuel injector. Thoroughly clean the area (using compressed air to blow away debris), carefully disconnect the high-pressure fuel line (noting residual pressure), remove the hold-down clamp, and remove the old injector (using a slide hammer or puller if seized). Ensure the injector bore and sealing surface are perfectly clean before installing the new injector with a new sealing washer.

  3. Reassemble and code injector

Torque the hold-down clamp and high-pressure fuel line to the manufacturer's specifications. Reconnect the electrical connector. Bleed the fuel system and use a diagnostic tool to code the new injector to the ECU if required by the specific engine model.

  4. Replace ECU

If the wiring and injector test good, but there is no pulse from the ECU during the Noid light test, the issue is likely a faulty injector driver in the ECU. This is the least common cause and should only be concluded after all other possibilities are eliminated.
