New Holland 3083 – ECU: Cylinder 4 Injector Short Circuit

Issue description

The Engine Control Module (ECM) has detected a short circuit in the electrical wiring for the cylinder 4 fuel injector. Specifically, the high side (power supply) wire is shorted to ground. This condition disrupts the normal voltage signals required to operate the injector, leading to improper fueling of cylinder 4. Common symptoms include engine misfiring, rough running, audible knocking, and exhaust smoke.

Check the cause

  1. Ensure the machine is parked, parking brake engaged, engine off, and battery disconnected before testing.

  2. Visually inspect the wiring harness leading to the cylinder 4 fuel injector (the rearmost cylinder) for chafing, melting, cuts, or pinched wires.

  3. Examine the electrical connectors at the injector and the ECU for corrosion, bent or broken pins, or loose connections.

  4. Perform an injector resistance test: disconnect the injector and measure resistance across its two pins. A reading near zero indicates an internal short (typical common rail injectors read 10-16 Ohms). Compare with other injectors on the engine.

  5. Test the wiring harness for a short to ground: with the injector and ECU disconnected, measure resistance from each injector connector wire to a known good engine ground. A reading of low resistance indicates a short to ground (should be an open circuit/infinite resistance).

Repair steps

  1. Repair damaged wiring harness

If a short to ground or damaged wire is found, cut out the damaged section and splice in a new wire of the same gauge using heat-shrink butt connectors. Insulate with loom or conduit. Replace the connector pigtail if damage is near the plug.

  2. Remove faulty fuel injector

If the injector fails the resistance test (internal short), clean the area around it, disconnect fuel lines and the electrical connector, and remove the hold-down clamp or nut. Extract the injector (a slide hammer or puller may be required) and clean the bore.

  3. Install new fuel injector

Install the replacement injector using a new copper washer and required seals. Torque the hold-down clamp or nut to the manufacturer's specification.

  4. Bleed and code injector

Reconnect fuel lines and electrical connectors. Bleed the fuel system and use diagnostic software to code the new injector to the ECU.
