New Holland 3107 – ECU: Fuel Metering Unit – Short Circuit To Battery
Issue description
The Engine Control Unit (ECU) has detected a short circuit to a high voltage source (the battery) in the electrical circuit of the fuel metering unit. Also known as a Fuel Control Actuator (FCA) or suction control valve, this solenoid valve regulates the amount of fuel entering the high-pressure fuel pump. When a short to the battery occurs, the ECU typically switches off the power stage for the metering unit to prevent damage. This condition disrupts the precise fuel control necessary for the common rail fuel system, which can cause improper fuel delivery, poor engine performance, or complete system failure.

Check the cause
Visually inspect the wiring harness and connectors between the ECU and the Fuel Metering Unit for chafed or melted insulation, corrosion, or bent pins
Ensure all related electrical connectors are clean, free of debris, and securely fastened
Disconnect the Fuel Metering Unit connector and measure voltage at the harness-side pins with the key in the 'ON' position (a constant battery voltage where a PWM signal should be indicates a short)
Perform a wiggle test on the wiring harness while monitoring voltage at the connector to check for intermittent shorts
Measure the resistance across the two terminals of the disconnected Fuel Metering Unit (typical Bosch valve resistance is 2.6 to 3.15 ohms; readings outside this range indicate a faulty solenoid)
Perform a solenoid activation test by applying power to listen for an audible 'click' indicating internal plunger movement
Repair steps
Repair wiring harness
If diagnostic tests point to a wiring issue (e.g., constant battery voltage found during harness test), repair or replace the damaged section of the harness and ensure all connections are clean and secure.
Replace Fuel Metering Unit
If the wiring is confirmed to be in good condition and the Fuel Metering Unit is diagnosed as faulty (incorrect resistance or seized plunger), replace the unit.
Clear fault codes
After completing the repairs, use a diagnostic tool to clear the fault codes from the ECU.
Verify repair
Start the engine and let it run for a few minutes to ensure the fault code does not reappear. Check for normal engine performance and response.
