New Holland 3123 – ECU: PTO Twist Sensor Not Calibrated
Issue description
The PTO twist (or torque) sensor measures the torsional force applied to the PTO shaft, which is necessary for load monitoring and automated speed adjustments. Fault code 3123 indicates that the calibration data for this sensor is missing or corrupt. As a result, the Engine Control Module (ECM) cannot accurately interpret the sensor's signals, which may result in improper operation of the power take-off system. This is often accompanied by related diagnostic codes, such as U70 ("PTO twist sensor not calibrated").
Applies to these machines
8 machines- T7 Series
- T5 Series
- T6 Series
- TS-A Series
- TM175
- TM190
- T4 Series
- TG Series
Check the cause
Verify battery and charging system health, as low system voltage can trigger erroneous fault codes
Ensure the PTO is turned off before attempting calibration (prevents U55 code)
Check for loose or damaged wiring and ensure all connectors related to the PTO sensor are secure (addresses potential U58 or U59 codes)
Inspect the PTO twist sensor for physical damage or incorrect installation (addresses U79 code)
Monitor for other fault codes during the calibration process (such as U55, U58, U59, U70, U79) to pinpoint underlying wiring or sensor issues
Repair steps
Prepare tractor for calibration
Park the tractor on level ground, disconnect any implements from the PTO shaft, and apply the parking brake.
Access Diagnostic Mode
Enter the diagnostic 'H' menu. Depending on the model, this may require connecting a diagnostic test switch (Tool No. 4FT 950) to the diagnostic port, or pressing and holding a combination of console buttons while starting the tractor.
Initiate Calibration
Navigate to the appropriate 'H' menu for PTO calibration (often located within the H1 menu).
Follow On-Screen Prompts
Follow the instrument cluster display prompts. This typically involves setting the engine to 1200 +/- 100 RPM and ensuring the shuttle lever is in neutral.
Store Calibration Values
Once the calibration complete confirmation message appears on the display, turn the key start switch to the 'OFF' position to store the new values.
Replace Sensor (if necessary)
If the calibration fails (e.g., throws code U70 indicating values were too high/low) or fault code 3123 reappears, replace the PTO twist sensor and repeat the calibration procedure.
