New Holland 3124 – ECU: Hand Throttle Channel 2 Above Range Max
Issue description
The Engine Control Unit (ECU) has detected a voltage signal from the hand throttle's second channel that is higher than the maximum expected value. This indicates an open circuit, a short to a power source, or a malfunction within the hand throttle potentiometer or its associated wiring. Because the ECU constantly compares the dual redundant signals for safety, this out-of-range signal causes the controller to distrust the operator's commanded engine speed, which may result in the engine derating to a preset RPM (e.g., 1800 rpm) or a complete loss of throttle functionality.

Check the cause
Inspect the wiring harness and connectors leading to the hand throttle potentiometer inside the armrest control console for chafing, pinching, or corrosion on the pins.
Check the diagnostic display for other active fault codes. Codes 3126, 3127, or 3128 point to the potentiometer itself, while codes 187, 2053, or 2054 indicate a broader sensor supply voltage issue.
Disconnect the sensor and test the potentiometer's total resistance across the two outer terminals using a digital multimeter set to Ohms.
Test the potentiometer's wiper terminal by connecting one probe to the center terminal and the other to an outer terminal. Slowly move the hand throttle lever through its full range of motion; the resistance should change smoothly without erratic jumps or drops to zero. Repeat the test using the center terminal and the other outer terminal.
Repair steps
Disconnect power
Turn off the tractor and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical damage before beginning the repair.
Access the hand throttle assembly
Disassemble the armrest control console covers to gain access to the hand throttle potentiometer.
Remove the faulty sensor
Carefully disconnect the electrical connector from the potentiometer. Remove the mounting screws or bolts securing it to the throttle lever mechanism, noting the sensor's orientation before removal.
Install the new sensor
Mount the new throttle sensor, ensuring it is correctly aligned with the throttle lever's mechanical parts, and secure it with the mounting hardware.
Reconnect and reassemble
Reconnect the electrical harness to the new sensor and reassemble the armrest console covers.
Perform calibration
Turn the ignition key to the 'ON' position (without starting the engine), slowly cycle the throttle lever from minimum to maximum three times, and turn the key off to store the new values. Note: A calibration procedure may also be accessible through the 'H' service menus on the instrument cluster, which often requires a dealer service tool.
Clear fault codes
Reconnect the battery, start the tractor, and use the onboard diagnostics to clear the fault code. Verify that the code does not reappear and that the hand throttle operates correctly.
