New Holland 3128 – ECU: Hand Throttle Potentiometer Differential Error

Issue description

The Engine Control Unit (ECU) has detected a discrepancy between the two separate signal channels within the hand throttle assembly. The ECU continuously monitors these signals to determine the operator's desired throttle position. When the signals do not correlate (e.g., the position potentiometer and switches disagree), the ECU cannot reliably determine the true throttle position and logs this fault as a protective measure to prevent unintended engine speed or behavior.

Check the cause

  1. Verify the active or stored fault code 3128 in the ECU and note any accompanying codes that may indicate a power supply problem.

  2. Check for stable battery voltage, ensuring the battery is fully charged and connections are clean and tight.

  3. Inspect the wiring harness and connectors leading to the hand throttle potentiometer for chafing, cuts, pinched wires, corrosion, bent pins, or a loose fit (especially in the armrest wiring).

  4. Check for mechanical issues with the throttle lever assembly, such as excessive play, a loose or worn lever, or a failing friction mechanism causing conflicting position reports.

  5. Test the potentiometer with a multimeter: verify a stable 5-volt reference supply, a solid ground connection, and perform a signal voltage sweep to ensure smooth voltage changes without sudden jumps or drop-offs.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect battery

Disconnect the battery before beginning any electrical repair work for safety.

  2. Access the potentiometer

Disassemble the armrest control console or side console covers to access the hand throttle potentiometer.

  3. Remove old potentiometer

Carefully disconnect the electrical connector, remove the mounting screws or bolts, and take out the old component.

  4. Install new potentiometer

Mount the new potentiometer in the exact same orientation as the old one, secure it with the mounting hardware, and reconnect the electrical connector.

  5. Reassemble and reconnect

Reinstall any removed console covers or panels, then reconnect the battery.

  6. Calibrate the throttle

Perform a calibration using the tractor's 'H-menu' or a dealer-level electronic service tool. Cycle the new component through its full range of motion to allow the ECU to learn the new sensor's values.
