New Holland 3141 – ECU: Low Fuel Flow Rate Detected

Issue description

The Engine Control Unit (ECU) has detected that the fuel flow rate measured by the system is below the calculated limit required for current engine operating conditions. Often described as 'Fuel Flow Setpoint Too Low' or indicating fuel metering unit leakage, this fault points to a potential issue with the fuel delivery system such as insufficient fuel supply, excessive leakage, or a failing component unable to meet pressure and flow demands under load.

Applies to these machines

  • T5.95
  • T5.105
  • T5.115
  • T8.330
  • T9.670
  • L230
  • CR Series
  • CX Series

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the fuel cap vent for blockages or malfunctions that could create a vacuum in the tank, restricting fuel flow

  2. Check fuel level and quality to ensure the tank is not empty and fuel is free of contaminants or water

  3. Visually inspect all fuel lines, fittings, and the water separator for signs of fuel leakage

  4. Check for air in the fuel system (aeration) by installing a clear diagnostic hose on the suction side to look for air bubbles

Repair steps

  1. Address low-pressure system issues

Replace any leaking fuel lines or damaged quick-connect couplers. Clean or replace the fuel cap vent if clogged. Replace primary and secondary fuel filters, cutting open the old filters to inspect for debris.

  2. Inspect fuel rail pressure sensor and bypass valve

Check the fuel rail pressure sensor and its electrical connector for damage or corrosion. Inspect the fuel pressure bypass valve on the rail for failures.

  3. Inspect high-pressure fuel pump

Check the high-pressure fuel pump. This is a known failure point, particularly on T9 tractors, and replacement is often required to resolve the issue.

  4. Check for leaking injectors

Measure the exhaust port temperature of each cylinder. A significantly colder cylinder can indicate an under-fueling issue related to a leaking injector dropping overall fuel pressure.

  5. Final verification

Clear the fault code and operate the machine under load to verify that the repair has been successful and the code does not reappear.
