New Holland 3141 – ECU: Fuel Flow Set Point Too Low

Issue description

The engine control module (ECU) has detected that the fuel flow setpoint is below the expected threshold, indicating a discrepancy in the fuel quantity balance. The amount of fuel being delivered to the common rail is less than what the ECU has requested based on current engine speed and load. This condition suggests either an insufficient fuel supply from the tank or a leak within the high-pressure fuel system, which often results in a significant loss of engine power, derating, or the tractor entering a stall mode under load.

Applies to these machines

  • T7.200
  • T8.275
  • T8.390
  • T9.670
  • L225
  • L230
  • C232
  • C238
  • T4
  • TK4
  • Farmall
  • Workmaster

Check the cause

  1. Inspect and replace all fuel filters, and clean the preliminary glass sediment bowl

  2. Inspect all low-pressure fuel lines and connections from the tank to the injection pump for leaks, kinks, or loose quick-connect fittings

  3. Check the fuel tank for foreign debris obstructing the pickup and ensure the fuel cap vent is functioning correctly

  4. Check for fuel aeration by installing a clear hose on the suction and return sides to look for air bubbles

  5. Perform an injector leakage test (e.g., by measuring exhaust port temperatures) to check for injectors returning excess fuel

  6. Inspect the fuel rail pressure sensor and connector for damage, and compare actual vs. commanded rail pressure

  7. Test the high-pressure injection pump and fuel control valve for proper operation

Repair steps

  1. Replace fuel filters

Replace both the primary and secondary fuel filters and clean the water separator bowl. Prime the system according to the manufacturer's procedure to remove any introduced air.

  2. Inspect and secure fuel lines

Trace all low-pressure fuel lines from the tank forward. Tighten loose clamps, replace cracked hoses, and consider eliminating loose quick-connect fittings for a more secure connection.

  3. Resolve fuel aeration

If air bubbles were detected, systematically check every connection on the suction side (between the tank and lift pump) until the source of the air leak is found and sealed.

  4. Evaluate and replace high-pressure components

If the low-pressure system is intact, test the high-pressure side. Replace the fuel rail pressure sensor if readings are implausible. Remove and professionally test or replace any suspected leaking injectors.

  5. Replace high-pressure injection pump

If diagnostics conclusively point to the high-pressure pump failing to generate required pressure and flow under load, rebuild or replace the injection pump assembly.
