New Holland 3188 – ECU: Injector Cylinder 1 Warning - Open Load
Issue description
The Engine Control Module (ECM) has detected an open circuit or break in the electrical path to the fuel injector for cylinder number one. This prevents the injector's internal solenoid from receiving the electrical impulse needed to open and inject fuel into the cylinder. As a result, the engine may run roughly, misfire, produce smoke, suffer from a loss of power, or run on a reduced number of cylinders.

Check the cause
Check for stable system voltage, ensuring the battery is fully charged (above 12.5V) and all primary ground connections to the chassis and engine are clean and tight, as low voltage can trigger erroneous codes.
Visually inspect the wiring harness leading to the cylinder 1 fuel injector for chafing, breaks, pinched routing, or stressed wires.
Inspect the cylinder 1 injector connector pins for corrosion, damage, or loose connections.
Perform basic electrical tests using a multimeter to check for voltage at the connector and a pulsing ground signal from the ECU while the engine is running.
Repair steps
Safety First
Turn the vehicle's ignition and master disconnect switch to the OFF position. Disconnect the battery before working on the fuel system or electrical connectors.
Access the Injector
Locate and access the fuel injector for cylinder 1. This may require removing the valve cover or other engine components.
Disconnect the Injector Connector
Carefully disconnect the electrical connector from the cylinder 1 fuel injector.
Test the Injector Coil Resistance
Set a multimeter to the Ohms (Ω) setting and place the probes across the two terminals on the fuel injector. A healthy common rail injector coil should read between 0 and 1 ohm. If it reads 'OL' (Open Line), infinite resistance, or a value significantly outside the expected range, the internal coil is broken and the injector must be replaced.
Test the Wiring Harness
If the injector coil resistance is within specification, turn the key ON (engine off). Check the harness connector; one of the pins should have battery voltage. Trace the continuity of both wires from the injector connector back to the ECU connector using a wiring diagram. Connect a 'noid' light to the injector harness plug and crank the engine. The light should flash, indicating the ECU is attempting to fire the injector.
Repair or Replace
If the injector is faulty, replace it with a new or remanufactured unit. If the wiring harness is found to have a break, repair the specific wire or replace the harness section as needed.
Reassembly and Confirmation
After replacing the faulty component, reconnect all connectors and reassemble any removed parts. Reconnect the battery. Start the engine and check for the presence of the fault code. On some systems, new injectors may need to be coded to the ECU using a diagnostic tool.
