New Holland 3268 – ECM: Main relay 3 – Short circuit to Ground
Issue description
The Engine Control Module (ECM) has detected a short circuit to ground in the electrical circuit for Main Relay 3. This condition indicates that the power circuit controlled by this relay is likely being diverted to the vehicle's chassis or another ground point before reaching its intended component. This causes improper operation of the relay and may affect the systems it controls.
Applies to these machines
9 machines- T7 Series
- T8 Series
- T8.275
- T8.300
- T8.330
- T8.360
- T8.390
- T8.410
- T8.420
Check the cause
Visually inspect the wiring harness associated with the main relays for damage, chafing, melting, or corrosion, especially where it contacts the frame
Inspect fuses related to the engine control system and main relays (e.g., 30 Amp Engine Main Relay fuse)
Swap 'Main relay 3' with a known good identical relay from a non-critical circuit to see if the fault follows the relay
With the relay disconnected, use a multimeter to check for a short to ground on the load and control side of the relay circuit in the wiring harness
Test the relay itself by measuring internal coil resistance (pins 85 and 86) and checking for continuity between load pins (30 and 87) when 12V is applied to the control circuit
Repair steps
Safety First
Disconnect the battery before beginning any electrical repairs to prevent short circuits and electrical shock.
Locate Main Relay 3
The main relays are typically located in a fuse and relay box in the engine compartment or near the battery. Refer to the operator's manual or a service manual for the specific location on your machine.
Identify Main Relay 3
The relays should be labeled on the fuse box cover or in the service manual diagram.
Replace the Relay
If the diagnostic checks indicate a faulty relay, replace it with a new one.
Repair Wiring
If the diagnostic checks reveal a short in the wiring harness, carefully repair the damaged section. This may involve cutting out the damaged portion, splicing in a new piece of wire of the same gauge, and sealing the repair with heat shrink tubing to prevent future corrosion.
Reconnect and Test
Once the repair is complete, reconnect the battery. Clear any stored fault codes using a diagnostic tool if available. Start the tractor and check if the fault code returns.
