New Holland 3305 – ECU: Rail Pressure Below Minimum Limit in Controlled Mode

Issue description

The Engine Control Unit (ECU) has detected that the actual fuel rail pressure has dropped below the minimum required threshold compared to the desired pressure while operating in a controlled mode. This indicates an inability to maintain the expected fuel pressure for the current engine operating conditions, which will negatively affect engine performance. The root cause can stem from a restriction in the low-pressure supply side, a leak within the high-pressure system, or a failure in high-pressure generation.

Applies to these machines

  • T6.120
  • T6.140
  • T7.170
  • T7.210
  • T8.xxx series
  • CR6.80
  • CR6.90
  • CR9060
  • W270C
  • W300C
  • C232

Check the cause

  1. Check fuel quality and level to ensure the tank has sufficient, clean diesel free from water, dirt, or algae

  2. Inspect primary and secondary fuel filters for clogs or exceeded service intervals (common cause of fuel restriction)

  3. Visually inspect all fuel lines from the tank to the injectors for leaks, cracks, or loose connections

  4. Check for air in the low-pressure fuel system by temporarily installing a clear hose to look for bubbles (bleed system if air is found)

  5. Test the fuel lift pump pressure against manufacturer specifications to ensure it is supplying adequate volume to the high-pressure pump

  6. Using a diagnostic scanner, compare 'Desired' vs. 'Actual' fuel rail pressure at idle and under load (a consistent lag points to a supply or high-pressure pump issue)

  7. Test the rail pressure sensor electrical circuit (verify 5V reference, ~0.5V signal with engine off, and 1.0-1.5V at idle)

Repair steps

  1. Perform Fuel Pressure Relief Valve (PRV) test

To diagnose a high-pressure leak, disconnect the PRV return line on the fuel rail and direct it into a measuring container. Start the engine and let it idle. There should be no fuel flow from the PRV during normal operation. If fuel leaks at idle, replace the faulty PRV.

  2. Perform Injector Return Flow (Leak-Off) test

If the PRV is intact, check for excessive injector leakage. Disconnect the low-pressure return lines from each injector and connect a leak-off test kit. Idle the engine for one minute and measure the fuel collected. Replace any injector that returns a significantly higher volume of fuel than the others.

  3. Test and replace High-Pressure Pump

If the PRV and injectors are functioning correctly, the high-pressure pump may be weak. Follow the service manual procedure to block the pump outlet and measure cranking pressure. A healthy pump should generate 800+ bar in a few seconds. If it fails to reach specified pressure, replace the high-pressure pump.
