New Holland 3313 – ECM: Cylinder 6 BIP Search Failure - Too Many Unsuccessful Searches - Rail Pressure Drop Rate too High

Issue description

The Engine Control Module (ECM) has repeatedly failed to detect the Beginning of Injection Period (BIP) signal from the cylinder 6 injector, indicating the injector is not responding correctly to injection commands. Simultaneously, the ECM detected an abnormally rapid decrease in common rail fuel pressure, suggesting a significant internal fuel leak. This combination typically results in misfires, rough running, smoke, reduced engine power, and potential engine shutdown.

Check the cause

  1. Check for other active fault codes related to fuel pressure, sensors, or other injectors to help pinpoint the root cause

  2. Visually inspect the wiring harness and connectors for the cylinder 6 injector for any signs of damage, corrosion, or loose connections

  3. Check fuel quality and supply, ensuring the fuel tank is free of debris or algae and replacing primary and secondary fuel filters if suspect

  4. Check the low-pressure fuel system to verify the lift pump is supplying adequate fuel to the high-pressure pump without air intrusion

  5. Perform an injector leak-off test to measure return flow; an injector with excessive return flow is likely leaking internally

Repair steps

  1. Depressurize fuel system

Disconnect the battery and relieve any pressure in the high-pressure fuel system before beginning work.

  2. Access cylinder 6 injector

Remove the valve cover, rocker arms, injector wiring harness, and any other components obstructing access to the cylinder 6 fuel injector.

  3. Remove high-pressure fuel line

Carefully disconnect the high-pressure fuel line (injector connector tube) from the injector. It is highly recommended to replace this tube and its seals whenever an injector is replaced.

  4. Remove the injector

Remove the two retaining bolts holding the injector in place and carefully extract the injector from the cylinder head. A slide hammer or special puller tool may be required if the injector is seized.

  5. Install new injector

Ensure the new injector's copper sealing washer and O-ring are in place. Lubricate the O-ring with a suitable grease like Vaseline. Carefully insert the new injector and install the new high-pressure connector tube.

  6. Torque components

Torque the injector retaining bolts to 9 Nm, followed by an additional 75-degree turn. Torque the fuel tube nut to 50 Nm, and the injector harness nuts to 1.5 Nm.

  7. Reassemble and test

Reinstall the rocker arms, valve cover, and all other removed components. Reconnect the battery, bleed the fuel system according to the manufacturer's procedure, start the engine, check for leaks, and clear fault codes. Code the new injector to the ECM if required.

Parts you might need

(5)
  • Fuel Injector

    504255185

    New Holland/Case OEM part number. Alternate PNs: 504255185R, 500060418, 500061288. Bosch PN: 0445120157 or 0 986 435 564.

  • Case OEM part number. Bosch PN: F00RJ01280, Iveco PN: 504100835. Best practice is to replace this high-pressure fuel line with the injector.

  • Injector Seal Kit

Includes copper washer and O-rings. Often included with a new injector but should be verified.

  • Cylinder 6 Fuel Injector

    504287070 / 5801470098 / 0445120075

Always order by Engine Serial Number (ESN) to ensure correct flow rates.

  • High-Pressure Fuel Line (Rail to Injector 6)

    51654426 / 87348175

Highly recommended to replace to prevent micro-leaks after re-torquing.
