New Holland 3417 – ENGINE control module (ECU): Short Circuit in Cylinder 4 Glow Plug
Issue description
The Engine Control Unit (ECU) has detected an abnormally high current flow in the circuit for glow plug number 2, indicating a short circuit. This is typically caused by the internal heating element of the glow plug failing and creating a direct path to ground, or by the wiring harness shorting to a metal engine component. This condition may prevent the engine from starting properly, especially in cold conditions, and can cause abnormal operation or rough running shortly after startup.

Check the cause
Ensure the engine is cool and disconnect the negative battery terminal before beginning any work
Visually inspect the cylinder 4 glow plug wiring and connector for melted insulation, frayed wires, or corrosion
Disconnect the electrical connector from the cylinder 4 glow plug to isolate the circuit for testing
Perform a glow plug resistance test using a multimeter set to Ohms. Measure between the glow plug terminal and engine ground (expected: 0.5-2.0 ohms). A reading of infinite resistance or 'OL' indicates a broken filament (open circuit), while a reading near zero confirms an internal short
Test the wiring harness for a short to ground. With the glow plug disconnected, check for continuity between the harness power wire and engine ground. Continuity indicates a short in the wiring harness
Repair steps
Disconnect wiring
Carefully remove the electrical connector from the top of the faulty glow plug.
Apply penetrating oil
Spray penetrating oil around the base of the glow plug threads and let it soak for at least 15 minutes to help loosen it.
Remove glow plug
Using a deep socket and wrench, carefully turn the glow plug counter-clockwise to remove it, applying steady pressure to avoid breakage in the cylinder head.
Clean threads
Use a thread chaser or small brush to clean the cylinder head threads to ensure good thermal contact for the new plug.
Install new glow plug
Apply anti-seize to the threads, thread in by hand to avoid cross-threading, and torque to 12-15 ft-lbs. Do not over-tighten.
Reconnect and finalize
Apply dielectric grease to the terminal, reconnect the wire, reconnect the battery, clear fault codes, and start the engine to verify the repair.
