New Holland 3696 – ECU: Failure in Glow Plug Cylinder 2

Issue description

The engine control system has detected a failure in the glow plug circuit associated with cylinder 2. This fault prevents the glow plug from heating correctly, which can negatively affect the engine's ability to start or run properly, often leading to difficult cold starts, rough running, and white smoke from the exhaust until the cylinder warms up.

Check the cause

  1. Visually inspect the wiring harness and connector leading to the cylinder 2 glow plug for any signs of damage, corrosion, or loose connections.

  2. Perform a continuity/resistance test on the glow plug: disconnect the wire and measure resistance between the terminal and engine ground. Expected resistance is 0.5 to 2.0 ohms; an 'open' circuit (infinite resistance) indicates a failed plug.

  3. Perform a voltage test: with wiring connected and the ignition key in the 'on' position (pre-heat cycle), measure voltage at the terminal. It should be close to battery voltage. If no voltage is present, the issue may be the glow plug relay, timer, or wiring rather than the plug itself.

  4. Perform a current draw test using a DC clamp-style ammeter. Compare the amperage reading for cylinder 2 with the other cylinders. A significantly lower or non-existent draw indicates a faulty glow plug.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect battery

Disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent accidental short circuits.

  2. Locate and access glow plug

Identify the glow plug for cylinder 2. Remove any engine covers or components necessary for access.

  3. Apply penetrating oil

Spray penetrating oil around the base of the glow plug and let it soak for at least 15 minutes to help loosen it.

  4. Remove wiring

Carefully disconnect the electrical connector from the top of the glow plug.

  5. Remove old glow plug

Using the correct size deep socket and a ratchet, carefully turn the glow plug counter-clockwise to remove it. Apply steady pressure to avoid breaking it off in the cylinder head.

  6. Clean threads

Use a thread chaser or a tap to clean the threads in the cylinder head to ensure the new glow plug will seat correctly and transfer heat effectively.

  7. Install new glow plug

Apply a small amount of anti-seize compound to the threads. Thread the new glow plug in by hand to avoid cross-threading, then use a torque wrench to tighten to 12-15 ft-lbs (16-20 Nm). Do not over-tighten.

  8. Reconnect and finalize

Apply dielectric grease to the electrical terminal and reconnect the wiring harness. Reconnect the negative battery terminal, clear the fault code using a diagnostic tool, and start the engine to verify the repair.
