New Holland 3719 – ECU: Lambda Sensor Sigma Limit Exceeded
Issue description
This fault indicates that the lambda value (sigma), which measures the oxygen concentration in the exhaust, has exceeded the maximum allowable threshold programmed into the engine control software. This means the Lambda (O2/NOx) sensor is reading an implausibly high oxygen level, or the sensor's internal logic and calibration has failed.
Applies to these machines
5 machines- T6
- T7
- T8
- T9
- Heavy construction equipment
Check the cause
Inspect the Lambda sensor wiring harness and ECU connector for damage, corrosion, or open/short circuits
Inspect the exhaust system upstream of the Lambda sensor for leaks, as unmetered ambient air entering through a cracked pipe or blown gasket can cause a falsely high oxygen reading
Inspect the Charge-Air Cooler (CAC) boots and intake manifold for boost leaks, which can severely alter the air-fuel ratio
Connect the New Holland E.A.SY. diagnostic tool to monitor live data for the Lambda sensor's oxygen concentration and internal resistance (Ri) to determine if the sensor is dead or drifting out of range
Repair steps
Prepare machine
Turn off the machine and disconnect the battery. Allow the exhaust system to cool completely.
Remove faulty sensor
Disconnect the Lambda sensor wiring harness. Carefully unscrew the sensor from the exhaust pipe. Do not use an impact wrench, as this can damage the exhaust bung threads.
Clean mounting port
Clean the exhaust pipe threads and remove any heavy carbon deposits from the mounting port.
Install new sensor
Install the new Lambda/NOx sensor. Important: Do not touch the ceramic probe of the new sensor with your bare fingers, as oil contamination will cause premature failure.
Torque sensor
Tighten the sensor to the manufacturer's specified torque (usually around 40-50 Nm, but verify with your specific engine manual).
Reconnect components
Reconnect the wiring harness securely and reconnect the battery.
Clear codes and verify
Connect the E.A.SY. diagnostic tool, clear the OBD/EDC fault codes, and run the engine to verify the repair. Ensure the live lambda readings are now within normal parameters.
