New Holland 3730 – EDC: Soot in Oil Exceeded Maximum Limit

Issue description

This code indicates that the engine's control system has calculated or detected that the concentration of soot particulate in the engine oil has surpassed the maximum allowable threshold. High soot levels degrade the oil's viscosity and lubricating properties, which can lead to severe internal engine wear if not addressed. This condition is often a byproduct of frequent Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) regenerations, incomplete combustion, or extended oil drain intervals.

Applies to these machines

  • T6000 series
  • T7 series
  • TD5 series
  • T4000 series
  • C232
  • L190
  • L220
  • C190
  • Combine Harvesters
  • Forage Harvesters

Check the cause

  1. Verify Service History: Check if the machine is simply overdue for a standard engine oil and filter change.

  2. Check DPF Regeneration Frequency: Use a diagnostic tool to check the DPF soot load and regeneration history. Excessively frequent active regenerations can cause fuel and soot to wash past the piston rings into the crankcase.

  3. Inspect Fuel System for Leaks: Check for fuel injector leakage or poor atomization. The NEF Electronic Fuel System diagnosis guide recommends checking the fuel leakage rate from electronically controlled injectors, as leaking injectors cause incomplete combustion and heavy soot production.

  4. Check Air Intake and EGR: Ensure the air filter is not restricted and the EGR valve is functioning properly, as air starvation heavily increases soot production.

Repair steps

  1. Drain the oil

Warm up the engine slightly, then drain the soot-contaminated engine oil from the oil pan.

  2. Replace the filter

Remove and discard the old engine oil filter. Lubricate the gasket of the new OEM filter and install it.

  3. Refill engine oil

Refill the engine crankcase to the proper level using the manufacturer-specified oil (e.g., CNH Ambra Mastergold or an oil meeting the specific Tier/Stage requirements of your engine).

  4. Connect diagnostic tool

Connect the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) or a compatible aftermarket diagnostic scanner (like Jaltest) to the machine's diagnostic port.

  5. Reset the soot/oil counter

Navigate to the Engine ECU (EDC) maintenance functions. You MUST perform the 'Soot in oil reset' or 'Oil degradation counter reset' procedure. Simply changing the oil will not clear the code, as the ECU calculates this value based on engine operating hours and fuel usage.

  6. Clear codes

Clear the 3730 fault code from the EDC memory.

  7. Test run

Run the engine, check for leaks at the filter, and verify the fault code does not return.
