New Holland 3787 – ECM: DPF Flow Resistance Very High

Issue description

The engine's after-treatment system has detected a very high flow resistance within the Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF). This indicates that the DPF is heavily restricted or clogged with soot and/or ash, preventing the normal flow of exhaust gases. If left unaddressed, this condition can lead to reduced engine power, increased fuel consumption, and potential damage to the after-treatment system.

Applies to these machines

  • C232
  • 200 Series
  • Workmaster

Check the cause

  1. Attempt to initiate a forced or manual regeneration of the DPF system using the machine's controls or the New Holland Electronic Service Tool (EST).

  2. Inspect the DPF differential pressure sensor and its two connected hoses for cracks, melting, leaks, or blockages from soot or moisture.

  3. Check for other active fault codes related to the after-treatment system (e.g., temperature sensors, NOx sensors, or DPF pressure sensor voltage) that could prevent proper regeneration.

  4. Inspect the exhaust system for any leaks before the DPF, as this can affect the pressure and temperature readings required for a successful regeneration.

  5. Review machine operation history for frequent short trips or prolonged periods of low-idle operation, which can prevent the DPF from reaching the necessary temperature for passive regeneration.

Repair steps

  1. Attempt forced regeneration

Perform a forced regeneration. If the cycle does not start or fails to complete, proceed to the next steps.

  2. Inspect and test differential pressure sensor

Visually inspect the sensor and connecting hoses. Replace the hoses if they appear compromised. Test the sensor's voltage output using a diagnostic tool to ensure it is within the manufacturer's specified range.

  3. Clean or replace the DPF

If the sensor and hoses are in good condition and forced regeneration is ineffective, the DPF is likely clogged with ash. Remove the DPF assembly and send it to a specialized cleaning service to bake and blow out the ash, or replace it with a new or remanufactured unit.

  4. Reinstall and reset system

Reinstall the DPF onto the machine, ensuring all gaskets and clamps are correctly fitted. Clear the fault codes using a diagnostic tool. Perform a 'DPF reset' using the New Holland EST diagnostic software to tell the ECU that a clean filter has been installed.
