New Holland 3804 – ECU: Fuel Metering Unit : Threshold of the battery under voltage for switching to start with MeUn procedure
Issue description
This code indicates that the battery voltage has dropped below the minimum threshold required by the Engine Control Unit (ECU) to properly actuate the Fuel Metering Unit (MeUn) during the engine starting sequence. The Fuel Metering Unit, located on the high-pressure fuel pump, regulates the amount of fuel entering the high-pressure pumping chambers. If the voltage is too low during cranking, the valve cannot be controlled correctly, which can result in a no-start condition or incorrect rail pressure.
Applies to these machines
7 machines- New Holland tractors
- Heavy equipment
- T6000 series
- PUMA series
- NEF engine family
- Wheel loaders
- Excavators
Check the cause
Measure the resting battery voltage (should be >12.4V) and monitor the voltage drop during engine cranking (should not drop below ~9.5V).
Check all battery terminals, chassis grounds, and engine block grounds for corrosion, looseness, or damage.
Inspect the wiring harness and connector at the Fuel Metering Unit (located on the CP3/high-pressure fuel pump) for loose pins, chafed wires, or poor contact.
Check the main power relays and fuses supplying the Engine ECU to ensure there is no excessive resistance in the power circuit.
Repair steps
Address battery and starting system
If the batteries failed the load test or voltage drop test (dropping below 9.5V while cranking), charge or replace the batteries.
Clean electrical grounds
Remove, clean, and retighten the main battery ground cables and the ECU ground strap to ensure a clean metal-to-metal contact.
Repair wiring harness
If damaged wiring or a loose connector was found at the Fuel Metering Unit, repair the wiring harness or replace the pigtail connector.
Replace Fuel Metering Unit
If batteries, grounds, and wiring are in perfect condition and voltage at the MeUn connector is correct, the unit may have an internal electrical fault. Clean the area thoroughly to prevent dirt from entering the high-pressure pump, then remove the Torx screws and replace the valve.
