3831

New Holland 3831 – ECU: Valve Position Sensor Physical SRC Low

Issue description

The Engine Control Unit (ECU) has detected an abnormally low voltage signal from the position sensor integrated within the electronic throttle valve body (throttle valve actuator). This sensor provides feedback confirming the precise position of the throttle plate. A low signal indicates a potential issue with the sensor's output or its connection, which disrupts the feedback loop and leads to incorrect engine operation.

Check the cause

  1. Use a diagnostic service tool to confirm fault code 3831 is active and address any accompanying fault codes first

  2. Visually inspect the wiring harness and connectors between the ECU and the throttle valve actuator for corrosion, abrasions, or loose connections

  3. Perform a wiggle test on the wiring harness and connectors with the machine powered on to see if the fault status or engine behavior changes

  4. Visually inspect the throttle valve for carbon buildup or debris obstructing the butterfly valve

  5. Disconnect the wiring harness from the throttle valve actuator to check for correct supply voltage and a good ground connection

  6. Back-probe the signal wire at the connector with a multimeter to check for a stable and correct voltage reading

Repair steps

  1. Repair wiring and connectors

If the visual inspection or wiggle test reveals problems, repair or replace the damaged wiring sections and ensure all connections are clean and secure.

  2. Clean throttle body

If the throttle valve is dirty or sticking due to carbon buildup or debris, clean it according to manufacturer recommendations.

  3. Replace throttle valve actuator

If wiring, connectors, and the throttle valve are in good condition, the internal position sensor has likely failed. Replace the entire throttle valve body assembly, as the sensor is integrated and cannot be replaced separately.
