New Holland 3876 – Engine ECU: Timeout of CAN message TSC1-TR passive
Issue description
This indicates a communication failure on the Controller Area Network (CAN) bus. Specifically, the Engine Control Unit is not receiving the expected Torque Speed Control 1 - Transmission (TSC1-TR) message from the transmission or vehicle controller within the required timeframe. The passive designation means the message is expected for monitoring or standby purposes, rather than active engine control at that exact moment.

- T6000 Series
Check the cause
Perform a CAN Bus Resistance Test: Disconnect the battery and measure resistance between CAN High and CAN Low wires (should be approx 60 ohms; 120 ohms indicates a faulty or missing terminating resistor or broken wire).
Inspect the wiring harness between the Engine ECU and the Transmission Control Unit (TCU) for chafing, rodent damage, or pinched wires.
Disconnect the ECU and TCU harnesses and inspect the pins for corrosion, moisture ingress, or bent terminals.
Check the diagnostic display for other offline modules (e.g., code 14901 for Transmission module missing), which may indicate the TCU has lost power or ground.
Repair steps
Disconnect power
Always disconnect the negative battery terminal before servicing the CAN network or ECUs.
Repair wiring
If CAN High or CAN Low wires are damaged, cut out the damaged section and splice in new wiring using environmentally sealed heat-shrink butt connectors or a dedicated wiring repair kit.
Replace terminating resistor
If the CAN bus resistance tested at 120 ohms, locate the faulty terminating resistor (usually at the physical ends of the CAN backbone) and replace it.
Clean connections
Spray electrical contact cleaner into the ECU and TCU connectors. Apply a light amount of dielectric grease to the seals (not directly on the pins) and securely reconnect them.
Clear codes
Reconnect the battery. Use the New Holland Electronic Service Tool (EST) or a compatible diagnostic scanner to clear the inactive fault codes from the Engine ECU memory.
