3900

New Holland 3900 – ECU/ECM: Engine Temperature Exceeded Warning Level

Issue description

The engine's coolant temperature has surpassed a critical warning threshold, indicating a potential overheating condition. The Engine Control Unit (ECU) continuously monitors this via the coolant temperature sensor and triggers the fault when the safe operating limit is exceeded. This typically illuminates a red warning light and may cause the engine to derate or shut down to prevent catastrophic failure.

Applies to these machines

  • T4
  • T5
  • T6
  • T7
  • TD
  • TS
  • TM
  • L220
  • Compact Track Loaders
  • F5C Engines

Check the cause

  1. Immediately and safely stop the machine and shut down the engine to prevent damage.

  2. Once the engine has cooled, check the coolant level in the reservoir and radiator for potential leaks.

  3. Visually inspect the radiator, grille, and coolers for a buildup of dust, chaff, leaves, or mud that could restrict airflow.

  4. Inspect hoses, the radiator, the water pump weep hole, and the engine block for visible coolant leaks.

  5. Check for restricted coolant flow by feeling the top radiator hose as the engine warms up (it should get hot if the thermostat opens properly).

  6. Listen for grinding or squealing noises from the water pump and check fan blades for wobble indicating worn bearings.

  7. Inspect radiator hoses for signs of collapse, especially the lower hose.

  8. Test the coolant temperature sensor resistance with a multimeter in water of known temperatures to verify it matches manufacturer specifications.

Repair steps

  1. Clean the radiator

If airflow is restricted, use compressed air to blow out any debris from the radiator fins. Ensure all cooling components are clear.

  2. Replace thermostat

If the top radiator hose remains cool while the engine gets hot (indicating a stuck-closed thermostat), drain the cooling system, remove the thermostat housing, replace the thermostat, and refill the system with the correct coolant mixture.

  3. Replace water pump

If the water pump is leaking from the weep hole, making noise, or has worn bearings, drain the cooling system, remove the serpentine belt and any obstructing components, and replace the pump.

  4. Replace coolant temperature sensor

If sensor resistance readings are out of spec, ensure the engine is cool, unplug the electrical connector, unscrew the sensor from the block or housing, install the new sensor, and reconnect.
