New Holland 4008 – ARU: Remote Valve 2 Timer Potentiometer Out of Range

Issue description

The Armrest Control Unit (ARU) has detected that the voltage signal from the Timer Pot 1 for remote hydraulic valve #2 is outside the predefined minimum and maximum thresholds. This prevents the system from accurately reading the operator's input for how long the hydraulic function should remain active. This out-of-range signal indicates a potential internal failure of the potentiometer (such as a short or open circuit), a wiring integrity issue, or a fault within the control module itself.

Applies to these machines

  • T6000 Series
  • T6020
  • T6030
  • T6050
  • T6070
  • T7000 Series
  • T7030
  • T7040
  • T7050
  • T7060
  • TS-A Series
  • TG Series

Check the cause

  1. Visually inspect the armrest control console to ensure the timer adjustment knob for remote valve #2 is physically intact, not loose, and can be rotated through its full range without obstruction.

  2. Check the tractor's diagnostic menu for other active fault codes related to supply voltage (e.g., 4040, 4041) or CAN bus communication (e.g., 4042), which could indicate a wider electrical problem.

  3. Inspect the wiring harness under the armrest control panel connected to the remote valve controls for chafing, pinched wires, loose connectors, or corrosion on the pins.

  4. Test the potentiometer electrically using a multimeter (with battery disconnected). Measure total resistance across the outer terminals (this should be a fixed value, e.g., 5kΩ or 10kΩ), then measure resistance between the wiper (center terminal) and an outer terminal while slowly rotating the knob to ensure smooth, linear changes without erratic jumps or dropouts to an open circuit (infinite resistance) or zero.

Repair steps

  1. Power down system

Disconnect the tractor's battery to prevent electrical damage before beginning repairs.

  2. Access the component

Disassemble the armrest control console by removing screws and carefully lifting the plastic covers to gain access to the remote valve control block.

  3. Identify and remove faulty component

Locate the timer potentiometer for remote valve #2 (usually a small dial integrated with the electronic remote valve controls). Note the wiring connections before disconnecting them. Pull the knob off the potentiometer shaft and remove the potentiometer (which may be secured with a nut or be part of a larger lever/switch assembly).

  4. Install new part

Install the new potentiometer, ensuring it is correctly oriented. Reconnect the wiring harness. If only the knob is being replaced, press it firmly onto the new potentiometer shaft.

  5. Reassemble console

Reassemble the armrest console covers and secure all screws.

  6. Reconnect power

    Reconnect the tractor battery.

  7. Calibrate remote valves

Perform a calibration procedure through the tractor's diagnostic 'H' menu (e.g., 'HL' for EHR lever calibration). Follow the on-screen prompts to move the levers and knobs through their full range of motion, allowing the controller to learn the new component's signal range. Failure to calibrate may result in continued erratic operation or new fault codes.
