New Holland 4040 – ARU: ARU Supply Voltage Too Low
Issue description
The system has detected that the supply voltage to the Armrest Control Unit (ARU) has dropped below its acceptable operational threshold, which is typically below 8 volts. This low voltage condition disrupts the functions controlled by the armrest, such as the hand throttle and remote valves, and can lead to improper functionality or complete system shutdown.
Applies to these machines
14 machines- T4
- T5
- T6
- T7
- T8
- T9

Check the cause
Test battery health and Cold Cranking Amps (CCA) capacity using a load tester (a resting voltage of 12.1V instead of 12.6V can trigger communication codes)
Check charging system output with the engine running (should be stable between 13.8 and 14.4 volts at the battery terminals)
Visually inspect wiring harnesses around the armrest and under the cab for pinching, chafing, or damage
Inspect connectors for corrosion and check for poor ground connections, specifically the main battery-to-chassis and cab-to-chassis ground straps
Perform a voltage drop test on the positive side between the battery and the ARU power supply pin
Perform a voltage drop test on the ground side between the negative battery terminal and the ARU ground pin
Repair steps
Ensure safety
Turn off the tractor and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts before beginning any repair.
Access the ARU
Locate the Armrest Control Unit within the armrest assembly. Remove necessary covers or panels to gain access.
Inspect and clean connectors
Disconnect the main electrical connector to the ARU. Inspect pins and sockets on both the harness and module for corrosion, dirt, or damage. Clean with electrical contact cleaner and ensure a snug fit upon reconnection.
Repair wiring harness
Gently pull on individual wires in the armrest harness to check for internal breaks caused by seat and armrest adjustments. Repair any damaged wires with appropriate connectors and heat shrink.
Verify power and ground
Reconnect the battery and turn the key to the 'on' position. Use a multimeter to test for proper voltage at the ARU power supply pin and continuity to chassis ground. If voltage is low, trace the circuit back to the fuse panel and battery.
Check fuses and relays
Inspect fuses related to the cab and controller power. Replace any blown fuses and address the underlying short circuit if applicable.
Replace the ARU
If all wiring, connections, power, and ground inputs are confirmed to be good, the Armrest Control Unit itself may be faulty and should be replaced.
Calibrate systems
After replacing the ARU, calibrate functions like the remote levers and hitch control using the New Holland Electronic Service Tool (EST) or the tractor's built-in calibration menus.
