New Holland 4100 – EHR: Rear Remote No.1 No Control Message Received

Issue description

The tractor's control system has detected a complete loss of communication with the electronic control module for the number 1 rear electro-hydraulic remote (EHR) valve. The armrest controller is sending commands to the valve, but it is not receiving any messages or acknowledgments back over the CAN bus. This prevents the operation of the number 1 rear remote.

Check the cause

  1. Power cycle the tractor by shutting it down, waiting 30 seconds, and restarting to see if an intermittent module communication issue resolves.

  2. Visually inspect the wiring harness and connectors leading to the number 1 rear remote valve for chafing, corrosion, pinched wires, or loose connections.

  3. With power OFF and battery disconnected, measure CAN bus resistance between the CAN High and CAN Low pins at the diagnostic connector (expected reading is approximately 60 Ohms).

  4. With power ON, check for battery voltage at the power supply pin and ensure continuity to chassis ground (less than 1 Ohm) at the valve connector.

  5. With power ON, measure CAN bus voltages at the valve connector (CAN High should be 2.5-3.0 VDC; CAN Low should be 2.0-2.5 VDC).

Repair steps

  1. Repair wiring or CAN bus

If diagnostic checks reveal damaged wiring, incorrect CAN bus resistance (e.g., 120 Ohms indicating a missing terminator, or near 0 Ohms indicating a short), or missing power/ground, repair or replace the affected harness section and rectify any shorts or open circuits.

  2. Replace remote valve section

If all wiring, power, ground, and CAN bus tests pass, the fault is internal to the valve's electronic controller. Depressurize the hydraulic system, remove hydraulic lines, unbolt the old valve section, and install a new valve section ensuring all seals and O-rings are correctly seated.

  3. Calibrate the new valve

After replacement, calibrate the new EHR valve to the tractor's system using the instrument cluster display or a diagnostic tool to teach the system the new valve's spool travel limits.
