New Holland 4125 – EHR: Remote No. 2 Potentiometer Faulty

Issue description

The control module has detected a problem with the internal position sensor (potentiometer or position transducer) of the second rear hydraulic remote valve. This sensor is responsible for reporting the exact position of the valve's spool to the control system. A faulty sensor means the control module cannot accurately determine the position of the remote valve, which can lead to improper or unpredictable operation of the hydraulic implement connected to that circuit.

Applies to these machines

  • T7.170
  • T7.185
  • T7.200
  • T7.210
  • T7.220
  • T7.235
  • T7.250
  • T7.260
  • T7.270
  • T6 Series
  • T8 Series
  • T9 Series

Check the cause

  1. Visually inspect the wiring harness leading to the armrest controls and the number 2 remote valve lever for damage, chafing, or loose connections

  2. Check the tractor's diagnostic menu for other active fault codes (multiple potentiometer or communication codes could indicate a systemic issue like low battery voltage or a poor ground connection)

  3. Disconnect the tractor's battery before accessing electrical components

  4. Remove the covers from the armrest to access the wiring for the number 2 remote control lever

  5. Identify the three terminals on the potentiometer: two outer terminals for total resistance and a central wiper terminal

  6. Measure total resistance by setting a multimeter to Ohms (Ω) and measuring between the two outer terminals (should be stable and match the component's specification, e.g., 5kΩ or 10kΩ)

  7. Test the wiper by connecting one probe to the center (wiper) terminal and the other to one of the outer terminals, then slowly moving the control lever through its full range of motion (resistance should change smoothly without sudden jumps, dropouts to zero, or open circuits)

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect power

Ensure the tractor's battery is disconnected before accessing electrical components.

  2. Access the armrest controls

Remove the necessary panels and covers to gain access to the remote lever assembly within the armrest console.

  3. Remove the faulty lever

Label and disconnect the electrical connector from the number 2 remote lever. Unbolt the lever assembly from the armrest console.

  4. Install the new lever

Mount the new remote lever assembly into the armrest, ensuring it is securely fastened. Reconnect the electrical connector.

  5. Reassemble and power on

Reinstall the armrest covers and reconnect the battery.

  6. Perform calibration

Calibrate the new remote lever through the tractor's display service or diagnostic menu so the control module can learn the new potentiometer's minimum, maximum, and neutral positions.
