New Holland 4170 – Rear Electro-Hydraulic Remotes controller: Rear Remote No. 1 – Not Calibrated

Issue description

The electro-hydraulic remote (EHR) valve for the number one rear remote has lost its calibration data or the calibration has become corrupt. This prevents the proper electronic control of the hydraulic system associated with this remote. The controller has determined that one or more of the calibration values for the spool valve's travel are no longer valid. This can happen after a part replacement, if power is interrupted during a previous calibration, or due to a memory failure in the controller.

Check the cause

  1. Check for other active fault codes (e.g., ARM 29 or AUX 11010) or CAN bus communication errors that can prevent successful calibration

  2. Inspect the hydraulic system to ensure fluid is at the correct level and at a warm operating temperature. Low or cold fluid can affect calibration results

  3. Verify valve operation: With the engine running, manually operate the lever for remote #1 to ensure the valve spool is moving freely and not sticking. If calibration fails initially, stroking the valve back and forth can help clear debris or free up a sticky spool

  4. Inspect the electrical connectors for the remote valve solenoids and the associated controller for any signs of corrosion, damage, or loose connections

  5. Disconnect any implements from the rear remote hydraulic valves before starting the calibration procedure

Repair steps

  1. Enter Diagnostic Mode

With the tractor keyed on, access the diagnostic 'H' menu. This may require pressing a specific combination of buttons on the console.

  2. Navigate to Calibration

Use the up/down or increment/decrement keys to navigate through the menus to the remote valve calibration section (labeled 'EHR CAL', 'AUX CAL', or similar).

  3. Select the Valve

Once in the calibration menu, select the remote valve to be calibrated (remote #1).

  4. Initiate Calibration

Press the program or enter key to begin the calibration process.

  5. Follow On-Screen Instructions

The system will automatically test the valve by sending signals to find the flow threshold currents. Ensure the control lever for the remote remains in the neutral position unless instructed otherwise.

  6. Save and Exit

Once the calibration is complete, a 'Done' or 'End' message should appear. Key the tractor off to store the new calibration values in the controller's memory.

  7. Connect Special Tool (T9 Series)

For T9 series models, connect special tool (Part Number 380001903) to the quick coupler on the remote bank and its harness to the 6-pin Deutsch connector (C686M) at the rear of the cab.

  8. Access Calibration Menu (T9 Series)

Navigate to the 'EHR CAL' screen on the tractor's display.

  9. Start Calibration (T9 Series)

Press the PROG key to enter the calibration screens, select the desired remote, and press PROG again to start.

  10. Monitor and Complete (T9 Series)

The system will perform the calibration. If it fails, an error message will be displayed with a potential cause, such as 'Spool movement not detected'.

  11. Replace Remote Valve Section

If calibration fails repeatedly, and no other fault codes are present, replace the entire remote valve section as it may indicate a failure of the remote hydraulic controller itself or a mechanical issue with the valve.
