New Holland 4181 – ACM: EHR Control Lever 4 Open Circuit
Issue description
The Armrest Control Module (ACM) has detected a break or disconnection in the electrical circuit associated with the number 4 Electro-Hydraulic Remote (EHR) control lever. The system registers an open circuit when the voltage reading from the lever's sensor drops to a level near zero, indicating a loss of continuity in the wiring harness or a failure within the lever's internal potentiometer, which prevents the control signal from reaching the module.
Applies to these machines
4 machines- T7
- T8
- T9
- T6000 Series
Check the cause
Check battery voltage and charging system, as New Holland electronic systems can trigger erroneous fault codes under low voltage conditions
Visually inspect the wiring harness leading to and from the armrest control unit and the EHR control levers for pinched, frayed, or broken wires (pay special attention to articulation areas on articulated tractors)
Disconnect and inspect the electrical connectors for the number 4 EHR lever and at the Armrest Control Module for corrosion, bent pins, or pushed-out pins. Re-seat connectors securely
If applicable and accessible, swap the wiring connections between the number 4 lever and an adjacent, functioning lever. If the fault follows the swapped lever, the lever itself is faulty; if it remains on lever 4, the issue is in the wiring harness
Repair steps
De-energize the System
Turn off the tractor and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts during the repair process.
Access the Components
Depending on the tractor model, you may need to remove covers or panels to gain access to the underside of the armrest control panel and the relevant wiring harnesses.
Perform Continuity Tests
Using a multimeter, test the continuity of the wires between the connector for the number 4 EHR lever and the corresponding pins at the Armrest Control Module. A wiring diagram for the specific tractor model is highly recommended for this step. If a wire shows no continuity, it will need to be repaired or replaced.
Test the Lever/Potentiometer
If the wiring is confirmed to be intact, the fault likely lies with the control lever's internal potentiometer. The lever assembly will need to be replaced.
Replace the Faulty Component
If the control lever is identified as the faulty part, replace it with a new OEM or equivalent component.
Reassemble and Re-energize
Once the repair or replacement is complete, reassemble all panels and covers, reconnect the battery, and turn on the tractor.
Clear Fault Codes and Calibrate
Use the tractor's diagnostic menu or an electronic service tool to clear the fault code. For some models, a calibration procedure for the new EHR lever may be necessary for it to be recognized and function correctly.
