New Holland 4184 – HYD/AUX: EHR Joystick Potentiometer X Open Circuit
Issue description
The fault code indicates an open circuit in the potentiometer responsible for the X-axis (left/right) movement of the Electronic Hydraulic Remote (EHR) joystick. This suggests a break or disconnection in the electrical path of the component. An open circuit prevents the physical movement of the joystick from being converted into an electrical signal, disabling the hydraulic function controlled by that specific axis.

Check the cause
Inspect the joystick's wiring harness for any visible damage, such as chafing, cuts, or pinched wires.
Check the connectors at the joystick base and at the control module for corrosion, dirt, or pushed-out pins.
Verify stable system voltage to rule out 'ghost' codes by ensuring the battery is fully charged (above 12.5V) and that the main chassis and cab grounds are clean and tight.
Test the potentiometer's total resistance with a multimeter across the two outer terminals (should be stable and match the rated resistance, e.g., 5kΩ).
Test the wiper (signal) circuit by measuring resistance between the center terminal and an outer terminal while slowly moving the joystick left to right. Look for smooth changes without sudden jumps or drops to infinity (open circuit).
Repair steps
Disconnect power
Turn off the tractor and disconnect the battery to ensure safety before beginning repairs.
Access the joystick
Remove the necessary armrest panels and covers to expose the joystick assembly and its mounting hardware. Take photos during disassembly for reference.
Disconnect and remove
Label and disconnect the electrical connectors from the base of the joystick. Remove the mounting bolts holding the joystick to the armrest console and lift it out.
Replace the component
Replace the entire joystick assembly with a new or remanufactured OEM part (recommended). Alternatively, if a replacement potentiometer is sourced and you have advanced soldering skills, desolder the old potentiometer and solder the new one onto the internal circuit board.
Reinstall assembly
Secure the new joystick assembly in the armrest, reconnect the electrical harnesses, and reassemble all covers and panels.
Calibrate joystick
Perform a joystick calibration through the tractor's service menu on the display monitor. Move the stick to its full extents (left, right, forward, back) to teach the controller the new sensor's range and center position.
