New Holland 5008 – TCM: Rear PTO Solenoid Circuit Overcurrent

Issue description

The control module has detected excessive current in the electrical circuit for the rear PTO engagement solenoid. This over-current condition indicates a higher than normal current draw, typically caused by a short circuit in the wiring harness or an internal short within the solenoid itself. This fault will prevent the PTO from engaging or disengaging correctly. In some systems, this may also be described as the PTO solenoid circuit being shorted to a power source.

Check the cause

  1. Visually inspect the wiring harness and connectors leading to the rear PTO solenoid for damage, chafing, melting, or corrosion.

  2. Check the wiring harness for shorts to ground, ensuring it is not pinched or rubbing against the chassis.

  3. Perform a solenoid resistance test by disconnecting the PTO solenoid and measuring across its terminals (typical resistance is 6-8 ohms; a lower reading indicates an internal short).

  4. Check for stable voltage at the solenoid connector with the key on and the PTO switch engaged.

Repair steps

  1. Isolate the fault

Disconnect the rear PTO solenoid from the wiring harness, clear the 5008 fault code, and activate the rear PTO. If the code does not return, the fault is likely within the solenoid. If it returns immediately, the issue is in the wiring harness.

  2. Repair or replace wiring

If the fault is isolated to the wiring, trace the harness from the solenoid connector back to the control module. Repair any frayed or shorted wires, or replace the harness if damage is extensive.

  3. Replace the PTO solenoid

If diagnostic checks (such as a resistance reading below 6-8 ohms) point to a faulty solenoid, replace it. It is typically located on the rear of the tractor on the hydraulic valve block near the differential housing.

  4. Final verification

Reconnect all connectors, clear any stored fault codes, and operate the rear PTO to ensure the system is functioning correctly.
