7031

New Holland 7031 – Steering Control Unit: Steering Angle Sensor Out of Maximum Range

Issue description

The control system has detected a voltage signal from the steering angle sensor that is higher than the maximum permissible limit. This indicates a potential issue with the sensor's operation, its wiring connection, or its calibration. The steering angle sensor measures the steering wheel's position and rate of turn, which is essential data for functions such as autoguidance, electronic stability control, and four-wheel drive management.

Check the cause

  1. Check for other related fault codes, particularly those related to sensor supply voltage or communication errors, which could indicate a broader electrical issue.

  2. Visually inspect the steering angle sensor (typically located on the steering column or near the front axle) and its wiring harness for frayed wires, loose connections, or corrosion.

  3. Verify the sensor power supply using a multimeter to check for a 5-volt supply and a good ground connection at the sensor's electrical connector.

  4. Perform a signal voltage check by measuring the signal voltage while an assistant slowly turns the steering wheel from lock to lock. The voltage should change smoothly; staying at 5V indicates an out-of-range high fault.

  5. Attempt to recalibrate the steering angle sensor through the tractor's instrument cluster or diagnostic display (e.g., via the 'HH' menu) as the sensor may simply be out of calibration.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect power

Disconnect the tractor's battery before beginning any repair work for safety.

  2. Access the sensor

Remove steering column shrouds or other panels as needed to access the steering angle sensor.

  3. Remove the old sensor

Carefully disconnect the electrical connector, remove the mounting screws, and take off the old sensor.

  4. Install the new sensor

Position the new sensor correctly, ensuring proper alignment. Secure it with mounting screws and reconnect the electrical connector.

  5. Reconnect power

    Reconnect the tractor's battery.

  6. Calibrate the new sensor

Access the calibration menu through the onboard display. Follow the prompts to steer the wheels fully left, fully right, and straight ahead, confirming each position.

  7. Clear codes and test

Use a diagnostic tool to clear fault code 7031 and any related codes. Start the tractor and test the steering system and autoguidance to ensure the fault does not reappear.
