New Holland 80 – Transmission: Wheel Speed Sensor Reading Too High

Issue description

The transmission control module has detected a signal from the wheel speed sensor that indicates a rotational speed implausibly higher than the actual value. This out-of-range signal can be caused by a faulty sensor, wiring harness issues, an incorrect air gap, or tone ring damage. This fault directly affects speed-related systems, potentially causing erratic speedometer readings and limiting the transmission's ability to shift into higher gears.

Check the cause

  1. Visually inspect the wheel speed sensor and wiring harness for cuts, pinching, or abrasions.

  2. Check electrical connectors between the sensor and transmission controller for corrosion, damage, or loose connections.

  3. Inspect the tone ring (reluctor ring) for damage, missing teeth, or metallic debris accumulation that could interfere with the magnetic pickup.

  4. Perform a resistance test on the disconnected sensor (should read 900-2000 ohms across pins, and infinite resistance to chassis ground).

  5. Perform an AC voltage output test by safely raising the wheel and rotating it at approximately 0.5 revolutions per second (should produce a minimum of 0.2 volts AC).

  6. Check the wiring harness for continuity and shorts from the sensor connector back to the transmission controller.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect power

Disconnect the tractor's battery before starting the replacement to prevent electrical issues.

  2. Locate and access sensor

Locate the wheel speed sensor on the right side of the rear axle housing. Remove components like the hydraulic filter if necessary for access.

  3. Remove old sensor

Disconnect the electrical connector. Remove the retaining bolt or use a twisting motion to pull out the press-fit sensor.

  4. Inspect and clean

Clean the mounting area thoroughly to ensure a proper fit and remove any debris that could affect the new sensor's reading.

  5. Install new sensor

Install any supplied spring clip or bushing. Lubricate the sensor and O-ring, then gently push it into place until it contacts the tone ring (it will self-adjust the air gap). Secure with the retaining bolt if applicable.

  6. Reconnect components

Reconnect the electrical connector, reinstall any removed access components (like the hydraulic filter), and reconnect the battery.

  7. Clear fault codes

Start the tractor and use the dashboard interface or a diagnostic tool to clear the active fault code 80.

  8. Verify operation

Operate the tractor to ensure the speedometer reads correctly and the transmission shifts properly through all gears.
