8008

New Holland 8008 – Front PTO control system, MIU, or transmission controller: Front PTO Solenoid Open Circuit

Issue description

The Transmission Control Unit (TCU/TCM) has detected an open circuit in the front Power Take-Off (PTO) solenoid. This indicates a break or disconnection in the electrical path, preventing the flow of electrical current and rendering the solenoid inoperative. As a result, the front PTO cannot be engaged or disengaged. This condition is typically caused by a blown fuse, a broken wire, a loose or corroded connector, or an internal failure (burned-out coil) within the solenoid itself.

Applies to these machines

  • T6 Series
  • T7.170
  • T7.185
  • T7.200
  • T7.210
  • T7.220
  • T7.235
  • T7.250
  • T7.260
  • T7.270
  • TM Series

Check the cause

  1. Visually inspect the wiring harness leading to the front PTO solenoid for chafing, cuts, or heat damage.

  2. Check that all electrical connectors are fully seated and free of visible corrosion on the pins.

  3. With the ignition on and front PTO switch engaged, use a multimeter to verify 12V battery voltage at the power pin and a good ground connection at the solenoid connector.

  4. Perform a resistance check on the disconnected solenoid coil (a good solenoid typically reads 7-9 ohms; an 'OL' reading confirms an open internal circuit, while a reading of zero or near-zero ohms indicates a short circuit).

Repair steps

  1. De-energize the system

Turn off the tractor and disconnect the battery to ensure safety during the electrical repair.

  2. Locate and Access the Solenoid

The front PTO solenoid is located on the front PTO gearbox assembly. Access may require removing protective shields or covers.

  3. Test the Solenoid

Perform the resistance check as described in the diagnostic section. If the solenoid is confirmed to be open, it must be replaced.

  4. Repair Wiring (If Necessary)

If the diagnostic checks revealed a break in the wiring harness rather than a faulty solenoid, repair the damaged section using appropriate connectors and heat shrink for a durable, sealed repair. If a connector is corroded, clean it with a suitable electrical contact cleaner or replace the connector if the damage is severe.

  5. Replace the Solenoid

Carefully clean the area around the solenoid to prevent dirt from entering the hydraulic system. Unscrew and remove the old solenoid from the valve body (be prepared for a small amount of hydraulic oil to leak out). Ensure the new solenoid's O-rings are clean and properly lubricated with hydraulic fluid before installation. Install the new solenoid and tighten it to the manufacturer's specified torque. Reconnect the electrical connector, ensuring it is clean, dry, and securely fastened.

  6. Re-energize and Test

Reconnect the battery. Start the tractor and clear any stored fault codes. Activate the front PTO multiple times to confirm that it engages and disengages correctly and that the 8008 fault code does not reappear.
