New Holland 9012 – ARM: Front Lift Upper Limit Potentiometer Short to Positive
Issue description
The Armrest (ARM) controller has detected a short circuit to a positive voltage source in the electrical circuit of the front lift's upper limit potentiometer. This means the signal wire is receiving a higher voltage than expected, leading to inaccurate lift arm height readings and potential improper operation or failure of the front lift system.

- T7 Series
- T7000
- T8 Series
- TM Series

- TM140
Check the cause
Visually inspect the wiring harness leading to the front lift upper limit potentiometer for chafed, pinched, or melted wires that could cause a short to positive.
Check the potentiometer connector for corrosion, moisture, or pushed-out pins.
Verify that the controller and sensor circuits have proper power and ground connections, as poor grounding can cause erratic signals.
Test the potentiometer using a multimeter: measure total resistance across the outer terminals to ensure it matches spec, then measure the center (wiper) terminal while actuating the linkage to check for smooth resistance changes without dropouts.
Repair steps
Disconnect battery
Disconnect the tractor's battery before beginning any electrical repairs to prevent short circuits and ensure safety.
Locate and access the potentiometer
The front lift upper limit potentiometer is located on the front hitch assembly, connected via a linkage that moves with the lift arms.
Perform diagnostic checks
Complete the diagnostic checks listed in the section above to confirm if the fault lies with the wiring or the potentiometer itself. A wiring diagram for the specific tractor model can be invaluable for tracing the circuit.
Replace the potentiometer
If the potentiometer is identified as the faulty component, disconnect its linkage and electrical connector and remove it from its mounting. Install the new potentiometer, ensuring the linkage is correctly reattached. It is recommended to apply dielectric grease to the connector pins to prevent future corrosion.
Repair wiring
If the wiring is found to be damaged, repair or replace the affected section of the harness.
Reconnect and re-evaluate
Once the repair is complete, reconnect the battery.
Calibration
After replacing the front lift potentiometer, a calibration of the front hitch system is required. This procedure is typically performed through the tractor's diagnostic menu (often referred to as the 'H' menu) and may require specific conditions, such as the engine running at a certain RPM and the hydraulic oil being at operating temperature. In some cases, a diagnostic tool or a specific jumper on the diagnostic connector may be needed to initiate the calibration process.
