New Holland 96 – TMF: Steering Angle Sensor Below Expected Operating Range

Issue description

The Tractor Management Function (TMF) controller has detected a signal from the steering angle sensor that is lower than the minimum expected voltage or value. This indicates a potential issue with the sensor itself, the wiring harness, or its calibration. Because the steering angle sensor provides critical real-time data on wheel position for auto-guidance and precision farming systems, this malfunction can lead to erratic or disabled auto-steering, inaccurate steering feedback, and unexpected disengagement of the guidance system.

Check the cause

  1. Visually inspect the steering angle sensor and its wiring harness for damage, corrosion, loose connections, or bent/pushed-out pins

  2. Check for shorts to ground by turning the key OFF, disconnecting the sensor, and testing continuity between each pin on the component side of the connector and chassis ground

  3. Check for short circuits between the different pins of the disconnected sensor's connector

  4. Measure the sensor resistance between the power and ground pins (expected range is typically 5-6K Ohms)

  5. Check for low battery voltage - ensure the battery is fully charged (above 12.6V) and that all main power and ground connections are clean and tight, as low voltage can trigger ghost codes

Repair steps

  1. Repair wiring harness

If diagnostic checks revealed shorts to ground or damaged wiring, repair or replace the affected harness sections according to manufacturer standards.

  2. Replace steering angle sensor

If the sensor failed resistance or short circuit tests, disconnect the negative battery terminal, unplug the sensor, remove mounting hardware, and install the new sensor in the correct orientation.

  3. Perform sensor calibration

Navigate to the IntelliView display calibration menu (e.g., GNSS and Guidance -> Calibration). Select 'Wheel Angle Sensor Calibration' and follow on-screen prompts to steer fully left, right, and center. Perform a 'Roll Calibration' if required by driving in a straight line.

  4. Clear codes and test

Use the tractor's diagnostic menu or an electronic service tool to clear the fault code. Operate the tractor and its guidance systems to verify normal steering function.
