New Holland ARMRE 169 – Armrest Controller (ARM / ARMRE): Hitch TRAVEL potentiometer is failed

The Tractor Data Bus has signaled that the hitch travel range potentiometer has failed, and the hitch controller received this failure signal from the armrest controller. In many cases, this code is flagged as an 'Invalid Configuration' if the armrest hitch menu calibration was performed while a potentiometer (or a short circuit mimicking one) was connected to armrest connector J205 on a tractor that is not actually equipped with the travel limit feature.

   Verify if the tractor is actually equipped with the optional hitch travel limit feature

   If not equipped (Invalid Configuration cause): Check for miscalibration, as the system may think the potentiometer is present due to detected resistance at armrest connector J205 during a previous calibration

   If equipped (Hardware Failure cause): Test the cab hitch travel potentiometer resistance using a multimeter (OEM specification is 10,000 ohms ± 10%)

   Inspect armrest connector J205 and the associated wiring harness for shorts to ground, broken wires, or corrosion

   Access connector

   If not equipped (Invalid Configuration): Access the armrest controller wiring and locate connector J205.

   Inspect connector

   Ensure nothing is erroneously plugged into or shorting out connector J205.

   Run calibration

   Enter the tractor's diagnostic menu and re-run the armrest hitch configuration/calibration procedure.

   Complete calibration

   Completing the calibration with J205 open (disconnected) will tell the software the feature is not installed, clearing the ARMRE 169 code.

   Disconnect battery

   If equipped (Hardware Failure): Turn off the tractor and disconnect the battery ground.

   Remove trim

   Remove the necessary armrest trim panels to access the hitch control potentiometers.

   Disconnect harness

   Disconnect the wiring harness from the Hitch Travel Potentiometer.

   Test potentiometer

   Test the potentiometer with a multimeter. If it reads outside the 10,000 ohms (± 10%) range or shows an open circuit, the sensor is internally faulty.

   Remove potentiometer

   Unbolt the retaining nut/screws holding the potentiometer to the armrest console and remove the faulty unit.

    Install potentiometer

    Install the replacement potentiometer and secure it in the console.

    Reassemble components

    Reconnect the wiring harness, reassemble the armrest trim, and reconnect the battery.

    Calibrate hitch

    Turn the key on, clear the stored fault codes, and perform the hitch calibration procedure so the Armrest Controller can learn the sweep of the new potentiometer.
