New Holland ARMRE 18004 – Armrest Controller: Hand throttle #2 - voltage too high

The electronic control unit is receiving a signal voltage from the secondary hand throttle position sensor (potentiometer) that exceeds the maximum expected threshold. This condition is typically caused by a short to power (such as a 5V reference or 12V source) on the signal wire, an open ground circuit at the sensor, or an internal failure of the potentiometer itself.

   Verify the symptom: Check if the hand throttle is unresponsive, if the engine RPM behaves erratically, or if the tractor defaults to a fail-safe idle.

   Visual inspection: Inspect the wiring harness leading from the Armrest Controller to the hand throttle potentiometer for chafing, pinched wires, or exposed copper that could cause a short to voltage.

   Connector check: Disconnect the potentiometer and inspect the 3-pin connector for corrosion, moisture, or pushed-out pins.

   Circuit testing: Using a digital multimeter, probe the sensor connector (harness side) with the key ON to verify a proper 5V reference signal and a solid ground. Test the signal wire for an unwanted short to voltage.

   Component testing: Test the potentiometer's resistance sweep with a multimeter. If the resistance jumps erratically or shows an internal short, the sensor has failed.

   Power down the tractor, remove the key, and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical shorts during repair.

   Remove the retaining screws and carefully lift the armrest console cover to access the internal hand throttle linkage and electronics.

   Locate the hand throttle potentiometer attached to the side of the throttle lever assembly.

   Unplug the electrical connector from the potentiometer.

   Remove the mounting screws or retaining clips holding the potentiometer to the throttle lever mechanism and remove the faulty sensor.

   Install the new OEM potentiometer, ensuring the physical linkage/pin aligns correctly with the sensor's rotational slot.

   Secure the mounting hardware and reconnect the electrical harness.

   Reassemble the armrest console covers.

    Perform a hand throttle potentiometer calibration via the tractor's instrument cluster or display diagnostic menu.

    Failure to calibrate will result in a secondary code, such as ARM 9031 'Throttle potentiometer calibration unacceptable results'.

    Clear the inactive 18004 fault code and test operation.
