New Holland ARMRE 18021 – Armrest Controller: Rear hitch drop rate potentiometer - voltage too high

The control module is receiving a voltage signal from the potentiometer that controls how fast the rear 3-point hitch drops, and that signal is above the maximum acceptable threshold. This condition typically indicates a short circuit to a power source, a broken/open ground wire, or an internal failure of the potentiometer itself.

   Enter the tractor's diagnostic H MENU (specifically the H9 menu) to observe if the potentiometer voltage is stuck at a high value (e.g., 5V) regardless of knob position.

   Inspect the wiring harness inside the armrest console for pinched wires, chafing against the plastic housing, or disconnected plugs leading to the electronic draft control (EDC) section.

   Disconnect the potentiometer and use a multimeter to check the connector for a proper 5V reference and a solid ground coming from the Armrest Controller.

   Test the resistance of the potentiometer itself while turning the knob. If the resistance is open or erratic, the component has failed internally.

   Power Down

   Turn off the tractor and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical spikes while working on the sensitive armrest modules.

   Access the Armrest

   Remove the retaining screws to lift the cover off the armrest control unit (specifically the electronic draft control panel where the hitch knobs are located).

   Remove the Potentiometer

   Locate the rear hitch drop rate potentiometer. Pull off the external control knob. Disconnect the electrical connector from the back of the potentiometer. Remove the retaining nut or screws holding it to the panel.

   Install the New Part

   Insert the replacement potentiometer into the panel, secure it with the retaining hardware, and press the control knob back onto the shaft.

   Reconnect

   Plug the electrical connector back in and reassemble the armrest console. Reconnect the tractor's battery.

   Calibration

   Power on the tractor. You must perform a hitch calibration procedure (often found in the tractor's calibration menu) to "teach" the Armrest Controller the minimum and maximum voltage limits of the new potentiometer. Clear the inactive 18021 fault code.
