New Holland ARMRE 18038 – Armrest Module (ARU / ARMRE): Front hitch position drop rate potentiometer - voltage too high
Issue description
The signal voltage returning from the potentiometer that controls the front hitch drop rate is exceeding the maximum expected threshold (typically near or above 4.5V - 5.0V). This indicates an open circuit on the ground wire, a short to power, or an internal failure of the potentiometer.

Check the cause
Use the tractor's onboard diagnostic menu (H9 menu) to check the operation of potentiometers and verify what the ARU is reading in real-time
Disassemble the armrest panel and visually inspect the wiring harness and connector for the front hitch drop rate knob for pinched wires, corrosion, or loose pins
Disconnect the potentiometer and use a multimeter to check the harness side for a 5V reference signal and a solid ground
If the ground is missing (open circuit cause), trace the harness back to the armrest controller to repair the break
If the 5V and ground are present, test the signal wire for a short to voltage (short to power cause)
If the wiring is completely intact, the potentiometer has failed internally and must be replaced
Repair steps
Power Down
Turn off the tractor and disconnect the battery to prevent shorting sensitive CAN-bus components in the armrest.
Access the Potentiometer
Remove the retaining screws for the armrest control unit cover to expose the underside of the Electronic Draft Control (EHR) knobs.
Remove the Faulty Component
Locate the specific potentiometer for the front hitch drop rate. Unplug its electrical connector. Remove the retaining nut or clips holding the potentiometer to the console housing and pull the knob/potentiometer assembly out.
Install the New Part
Seat the new potentiometer into the armrest housing, secure the retaining nut, and reattach the control knob.
Reconnect
Plug the electrical connector back in and reassemble the armrest covers.
Calibration/Clearing
Reconnect the battery and turn the key on. Clear the inactive 18038 fault code. If required by your specific model's service manual, perform an armrest/EHR calibration to ensure the module learns the minimum and maximum voltage sweeps of the new potentiometer.
