ARMRE 18051

New Holland ARMRE 18051 – ARMRE: Joystick 1 Y-axis position - voltage too low

Issue description

The signal voltage coming from the Y-axis potentiometer of Joystick 1 has dropped below the minimum acceptable threshold. This condition is typically caused by an open circuit, a short to ground in the wiring harness, or a failed internal potentiometer within the joystick assembly.

Applies to these machines

  • T6 Series
  • T7 Series
  • T7.220
  • T7.235
  • T7.250
  • T7.260
  • T7.270 AutoCommand
  • T7.270 Power Command
  • T8 Series
  • T9 Series

Check the cause

  1. Access the tractor's onboard diagnostic menu (Menu H9) to check the operation of various potentiometers and voltage supplies on the hand controller.

  2. Locate the main connector to the armrest controller (e.g., C137). Ensure it is correctly installed and fully seated.

  3. Inspect the data bus wires, power wires, and ground wires going into the armrest controller. Gently pull on the wires to ensure the terminals are fully seated and not broken or pushed out of the connector housing.

  4. Test the specific Y-axis signal wire between Joystick 1 and the ARU for continuity, open circuits, or a short to ground.

  5. Attempt to recalibrate the joystick's X and Y axes using the tractor's display or electronic service tool to see if the module can relearn the position limits.

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

Turn off the tractor and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts while working on the armrest console.

  2. Disassemble the Armrest

Carefully remove the covers of the Sidewinder (or standard) armrest console to access the underside of Joystick 1 and the Armrest Module (ARU).

  3. Inspect and Clean

Disconnect the electrical harness from the joystick. Inspect the pins for corrosion, damage, or push-out. Clean the contacts with electrical contact cleaner.

  4. Repair Wiring

If the diagnostic checks revealed a broken wire or short to ground in the harness between the joystick and the ARU, repair the damaged section of the wire or replace the sub-harness.

  5. Replace the Joystick

If the wiring is intact and the voltage remains too low, the internal Y-axis potentiometer has failed. Remove the mounting screws securing the joystick and install a new joystick assembly. (Note: The potentiometers are generally not serviced separately from the joystick assembly).

  6. Reassemble and Power Up

Reconnect the joystick harness, reassemble the armrest console, and reconnect the battery.

  7. Calibrate

Turn the key on and use the tractor's electronic service tool or onboard H-menu to clear the fault codes. You MUST perform a joystick calibration procedure so the ARU learns the new X and Y axis voltage limits of the replacement part.
