New Holland ARMRE 18062 – Armrest Control Unit (ARU): Reference voltage _short circuit to 12V

Issue description

The reference voltage circuit (typically a 5V supply sent out by the controller) is detecting a full 12-volt signal, indicating the reference voltage wire is shorted directly to a 12V power source either within the wiring harness or internally within a sensor/module.

Check the cause

  1. Isolate the sensors by disconnecting armrest controls (Hand Throttle, Multi-Function Handle, EHR levers) one by one to see if the code goes inactive, indicating an internal short in that component.

  2. Inspect the wiring harness inside the armrest console for chafed wires, pinched harnesses, or melted insulation where a 12V supply wire might touch the reference voltage wire.

  3. Disconnect the main harness from the Armrest Control Unit (ARU) and inspect the pins for corrosion, moisture, or bent pins bridging a 12V pin to the reference voltage pin.

  4. With all sensors disconnected, use a multimeter to check the voltage output at the ARU reference pin to verify if it is outputting 12V instead of the expected 5V, indicating an internal ARU failure.

Repair steps

  1. Turn off the tractor ignition and disconnect the negative battery cable.

    This prevents electrical spikes during the repair.

  2. Disassemble the armrest console covers.

    This provides access to the Armrest Control Unit (ARU) and the internal wiring harness.

  3. Perform the necessary repair based on your diagnostic checks.

    If a wire is shorted: Repair the chafed/damaged section of the wiring harness using proper soldering and heat-shrink tubing, or replace the armrest sub-harness. If a sensor is shorted: Replace the faulty potentiometer/switch (e.g., hand throttle or EHR lever). If the ARU is internally shorted: Unplug the multi-pin connectors from the ARU, unbolt the module from the armrest chassis, and install a replacement unit.

  4. Reconnect the battery and turn the ignition key to the ON position.

  5. Clear the stored fault codes.

    On some models (like the T7), this can be done by accessing the H8 (Central Control Unit) menu on the instrument cluster to reset EEPROM values, or by using the New Holland Electronic Service Tool (EST) / Jaltest diagnostic tool.

  6. Perform a basic assurance test of the Multi-Function Handle (MFH) and EHR levers.

    Ensure all reference voltages are reading correctly and the code does not return.
