New Holland ATC 116 – ATC (Automatic Temperature Control) module: Evaporator sensor shorted to ground

Issue description

The system has detected that the voltage signal from the evaporator temperature sensor has dropped below the minimum threshold, indicating a short circuit to ground.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness leading from the ATC controller to the evaporator sensor for chafed wires rubbing against the chassis or cab frame that could cause a short to ground.

  2. Perform a disconnect test: Unplug the evaporator temperature sensor from the wiring harness, turn the key ON, and check the active fault codes. If the code changes to ATC 115, the sensor itself is internally shorted. If ATC 116 remains active, the short to ground is in the wiring harness.

  3. Measure the resistance across the two pins of the disconnected sensor using a multimeter. A dead short reading at or near 0 ohms confirms a failed thermistor.

Repair steps

  1. Access the HVAC Unit

    Remove the necessary cab interior trim panels, headliner, or seat surround to access the main HVAC evaporator housing.

  2. Locate the Sensor

    Find the evaporator temperature sensor. It features a slender copper or plastic-sheathed probe that is pushed directly into the aluminum fins of the evaporator core.

  3. Disconnect

    Unplug the 2-pin electrical connector linking the sensor to the ATC harness.

  4. Remove the Old Sensor

    Carefully pull the old sensor probe straight out of the evaporator core.

  5. Install the New Sensor

    Gently slide the new sensor probe into the exact same location in the evaporator core. Caution: Ensure the probe slides directly between the aluminum fins; do not force it or flatten the delicate evaporator fins, as this will restrict airflow and damage the core.

  6. Reconnect and Reassemble

    Plug in the electrical connector. Turn the key ON and verify that the ATC 116 code has cleared (or toggle the ATC switch to OFF and back to an operational mode to reset the system). Reinstall all cab trim panels.
