New Holland ATC 120 – ATC (Automatic Temperature Control): Blower speed select pot open/shorted to power
Issue description
The Automatic Temperature Control (ATC) module is receiving a signal from the blower speed selector potentiometer that is outside the expected voltage range. The system detects either a complete break in the circuit (open) or a wire that has rubbed through and is touching a 12V source (shorted to power).
Applies to these machines
2 machines- New Holland T8 Series (T8.320, T8.380, T8.410)
- New Holland T9 Series (T9.390, T9.450, T9.560, T9.615, T9.670)
Check the cause
Inspect the wiring harness leading to the back of the HVAC control panel for pinched wires, chafing, or broken wires that could cause an open circuit or a short to a power source.
Disconnect the harness from the climate control panel and inspect the pins for pushed-out pins, corrosion, or moisture that could disrupt the potentiometer signal.
Perform a potentiometer sweep test using a multimeter to measure the resistance of the blower speed selector switch while turning the dial. The resistance should change smoothly without any dead spots.
Verify that the potentiometer is receiving the correct reference voltage from the ATC module and has a solid ground connection. A lost ground will often cause the module to read the circuit as shorted to power or open.
Repair steps
Disconnect Power
Turn off the machine and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent any electrical damage during the repair.
Access the Control Panel
Carefully pry off the interior cab trim or bezel surrounding the HVAC/ATC control panel on the right-hand console or headliner (depending on the specific tractor model).
Remove the Panel
Unscrew the mounting hardware holding the ATC control unit in place and pull it forward.
Disconnect Harnesses
Unplug the electrical connectors from the back of the unit.
Replace the Component
Depending on the specific cab configuration, the blower speed potentiometer may be serviced as an individual rotary switch, or it may be integrated into the main ATC circuit board. If integrated, replace the entire Air Conditioning Control Panel unit.
Reassembly
Plug the electrical connectors into the new switch or panel, secure it with the mounting hardware, and snap the trim bezel back into place.
Clear Codes and Test
Reconnect the battery. Turn the key to the ON position, clear the inactive ATC 120 fault code via the tractor's diagnostic monitor (e.g., IntelliView display), and test the blower motor through all speed settings to confirm the repair.
