CL

New Holland CL – Transmission Control Unit (TCU): Cold Oil Warning

Issue description

CL is an informational message that appears on the digital instrument cluster when a technician attempts to initiate a transmission or clutch calibration procedure while the transmission fluid is too cold.

Check the cause

  1. Verify actual temperature: Check if the tractor has been running. If the tractor was just started, the transmission oil is genuinely cold, and the system is operating normally.

  2. Check for sensor faults: If the tractor has been working under heavy load for hours but the dash still displays 'CL' (or throws related codes like U19 or INST 13021/13022), the Transmission Oil Temperature Sensor may be faulty.

  3. Inspect wiring: Check the wiring harness leading to the transmission oil temperature sensor for open circuits, chafing, or shorts to ground.

Repair steps

  1. Abort calibration

    Abort the calibration procedure.

  2. Warm up transmission oil

Drive the tractor or operate the hydraulic remotes to bring the transmission oil up to the recommended working temperature (above 20°C, ideally 60°C).

  3. Re-enter calibration

Re-enter the calibration mode. The 'CL' message should no longer appear.

  4. Bypass warning

If it is not practical to wait for the oil temperature to rise, bypass the warning: When 'CL' is displayed on the screen, simply press the Upshift (or 'Hare' / 'HI-LO') button on the transmission controller.

  5. Proceed with calibration

The display will change to 'A' (or 'Dt' depending on the model), allowing you to proceed with the clutch calibration sequence.

  6. Locate sensor

If diagnostic checks prove the sensor is dead and falsely reading cold, locate the transmission oil temperature sensor on the transmission housing.

  7. Disconnect sensor

    Disconnect the electrical pigtail.

  8. Replace sensor

Quickly unscrew the old sensor and thread in the new sensor to minimize fluid loss.

  9. Reconnect harness

Torque to factory specifications and reconnect the harness.

  10. Top off fluid and clear codes

Top off the transmission fluid and clear any stored error codes before re-attempting calibration.
