DCU 19001

New Holland DCU 19001 – DCU: Battery voltage sensing (electrical) signal high / Battery voltage evaluation above upper limit

Issue description

The module is detecting an input voltage that exceeds the maximum allowable threshold (typically over 15V on a standard 12V system). This is most commonly caused by an overcharging alternator, a short to power in the wiring harness, or a faulty internal voltage sensor within the module itself.

Check the cause

  1. Charging System Test: Start the engine and use a digital multimeter to measure the voltage directly at the battery terminals. Normal charging voltage should be between 13.5V and 14.5V. If the reading is 15V or higher, the alternator's voltage regulator is overcharging.

  2. DCU Pin Voltage Test: Back-probe the power supply pins at the DCU connector to verify the actual voltage reaching the module. Compare this to the battery voltage to rule out harness issues.

  3. Wiring Harness Inspection: Inspect the wiring harness connecting the battery/alternator to the DCU for any chafing, melted insulation, or shorts to a higher voltage source.

  4. Ground Circuit Check: Verify that all ground connections for the DCU, engine block, and battery are clean and tight. A floating or poor ground can cause voltage spikes.

Repair steps

  1. Address the Charging System

    If the diagnostic checks reveal the alternator is producing excessive voltage, replace the alternator (or the internal voltage regulator, if serviceable).

  2. Repair Wiring

    If the alternator is charging normally but the voltage at the DCU connector is abnormally high, trace the harness and repair any shorts to power. Clean and tighten all DCU ground terminals.

  3. Replace the DCU

    If the charging system is normal, the wiring is intact, and the grounds are good, but the DCU still registers an internal overvoltage fault, the DCU itself has suffered an internal hardware failure and must be replaced.

  4. Software Configuration

    If the DCU is replaced, you must use the New Holland Electronic Service Tool (EST) to install the software. Note: CNH will not issue the required passwords for this module unless proper troubleshooting has been performed and documented.

  5. Clear Codes and Test

    Clear the fault codes using the diagnostic tool and test run the tractor to ensure the SCR system operates normally and the 19001 code does not return.
