New Holland DCU 19020 – DCU (Dosing Control Unit): Temperature sensor before catalyst (electrical) | signal low

Issue description

The signal voltage from the Exhaust Gas Temperature (EGT) sensor located upstream of the DOC/SCR catalyst has dropped below the minimum acceptable threshold. This indicates a short circuit to ground in the sensor's wiring harness, a melted connector, or an internal failure of the sensor element itself, which prevents the emissions system from verifying exhaust heat for DEF dosing and leads to an active regeneration lockout and engine power derate.

Check the cause

  1. Visual Inspection: Inspect the wiring harness routed to the pre-catalyst temperature sensor for melted wire insulation, chafing, or pinched wires that could be shorting the signal circuit to the chassis ground.

  2. Connector Check: Disconnect the sensor and inspect the electrical pins for corrosion, moisture, or heat damage.

  3. Resistance Test: Use a multimeter to measure the resistance across the sensor's pins. If it reads zero or near-zero ohms (dead short), the sensor has failed internally and must be replaced.

  4. Voltage Check: Turn the key ON (engine off) and probe the harness side of the connector to ensure the DCU is sending the proper 5V reference signal to the sensor circuit.

Repair steps

  1. Cool Down

    Ensure the tractor is turned off and the exhaust system has completely cooled down to prevent severe burns.

  2. Locate the Sensor

    Locate the EGT sensor threaded into the exhaust pipe before (upstream of) the SCR catalyst assembly.

  3. Disconnect

    Unplug the sensor's electrical connector from the main engine harness.

  4. Remove the Sensor

    Using a suitable wrench or specialized EGT sensor socket, carefully unthread the sensor from the exhaust bung. Apply penetrating oil to the threads and allow it to soak if the sensor is stuck to avoid stripping the exhaust pipe threads.

  5. Prepare the New Sensor

    Apply a small amount of high-temperature anti-seize compound to the threads of the new sensor (if it does not come pre-applied from the factory). Do not get anti-seize on the sensor probe tip.

  6. Install

    Thread the new sensor into the exhaust bung by hand to prevent cross-threading, then tighten to the OEM torque specification.

  7. Reconnect

    Plug the electrical connector back in. Ensure the wiring is secured with high-temp zip ties or clips so it does not rest against the hot exhaust pipe.

  8. Clear Codes

    Connect a diagnostic tool (such as the CNH Electronic Service Tool) to clear the DCU 19020 / P0427 fault codes. Start the engine and monitor the exhaust temperature readings to verify the repair.
