New Holland DCU 19102 – DCU: UREA level sensor (electrical) | signal low | P203C Reagent -tank level sensor -short circuit low

Issue description

The control module is receiving a lower-than-expected voltage signal from the Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) / Urea tank level sensor. The system interprets this low voltage as a 'short circuit low,' meaning there is likely a short to ground in the wiring, a failed internal sensor, or the sensor is coated in crystallized urea.

Check the cause

  1. Verify DEF Level: Manually check the DEF tank level and top it up with fresh fluid to rule out a legitimately empty tank triggering a low-voltage reading.

  2. Inspect Wiring and Connectors: Check the wiring harness between the DEF tank header and the DCU. Look for chafed wires, pinched harnesses, or corrosion inside the connectors (road salt and moisture commonly attack these connections).

  3. Test for Shorts: Use a multimeter to test the sensor circuit for a short to ground or an open circuit. Compare the sensor's resistance/voltage values against OEM specifications.

  4. Inspect for Contamination: Check the DEF fluid quality. Poor quality or old DEF can crystallize and coat the sensor, causing false readings.

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

    Turn the ignition off and remove the key. Let the machine sit for 10–15 minutes to allow the DCU and all other modules to fully power down and save their data.

  2. Drain the Tank

    Disconnect the DEF fill tube. Using a suitable clean drain hose, drain the DEF from the tank into a clean container (if reusing) or dispose of it if contaminated.

  3. Disconnect Header

    Disconnect the electrical connectors and the DEF fluid supply/return lines from the top of the DEF header assembly.

  4. Remove Header

    Remove the mounting bolts or the retaining lock ring securing the DEF header to the tank. Carefully pull the header assembly straight up and out of the tank.

  5. Clean and Inspect

    Inspect the inside of the DEF tank for dirt, debris, or crystallized urea. Clean the tank if necessary.

  6. Install New Part

    Insert the new DEF header assembly into the tank, ensuring the new rubber gasket/O-ring is seated properly to prevent leaks. Secure the mounting bolts or lock ring.

  7. Reconnect

    Reconnect the DEF fluid lines and the electrical connectors.

  8. Refill

    Refill the tank with fresh, high-quality DEF.

  9. Clear Codes

    Connect a diagnostic scan tool (such as the CNH Electronic Service Tool) to clear the DCU 19102 / P203C fault code. Cycle the key and run the engine to verify the DEF gauge reads correctly and the code does not return.
