New Holland DCU 19156 – DCU: UREA Pump speed | pump overspeed | Reagent-pump over speed
Issue description
This fault code indicates that the DEF (Diesel Exhaust Fluid) / Urea pump is running at an excessive speed (overspeed). This happens when the pump element is running with air instead of fluid (running dry). Because there is no fluid resistance, the pump motor spins faster than the calibrated threshold, triggering the overspeed code. This is typically caused by a lack of fluid, a massive leak, a blocked supply line, or internal damage to the pump.

Check the cause
Fluid Level: Verify that the DEF/Urea tank is not empty. An empty tank is the most common cause of the pump drawing air.
Line Inspection (Supply Side): Check the urea hose running from the DEF tank to the pump module. Look for kinks, blockages, or disconnections that would prevent fluid from reaching the pump.
Line Inspection (Pressure Side): Inspect the pressure side of the DEF system for any major leaks. A severe leak will prevent the system from building pressure, causing the pump to overspeed.
Electrical Connections: Ensure the pump motor is properly plugged in and that the wiring harness between the pump and the DCU is intact, as related codes (like pump unplugged or Hall sensor defects) can sometimes cascade.
Repair steps
Resolve Supply Issues
If a leak, blockage, or empty tank is found during diagnostics, repair the line or refill the tank.
Prime the System
Once fluid supply is restored, clear the fault codes using a compatible diagnostic tool and attempt to run a DEF system prime/dosing test to see if the pump recovers.
Replace the Pump Module
If the tank is full, the lines are clear, and the code persists, the pump element has likely sustained internal damage from running dry. You must replace the DEF pump module assembly.
Filter Replacement
It is highly recommended to replace the DEF/Urea pump filter (e.g., Sakura or OEM equivalent) when installing a new pump to prevent contamination.
Final Verification
Clear the DCU 19156 / P208D codes and run a forced SCR dosing test via the diagnostic tool to ensure the new pump builds pressure correctly and operates at the proper speed.
