New Holland DCU 19651 – DCU: UREA Tank level error

Issue description

The system is receiving an erroneous signal over the SAE J1939 CAN bus, or the directly connected Reagent (DEF/AdBlue) tank level sensor is experiencing a 'short circuit low' (SRC low), meaning the voltage signal has dropped below the minimum expected threshold due to a wiring short to ground or an internal failure.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness running from the DEF tank level sensor (DEF head unit) to the DCU for chafed wires, pinched harnesses, or melted insulation that could cause a short to ground.

  2. Disconnect the DEF level sensor connector and check for corrosion, moisture, DEF fluid intrusion (crystallization), or bent pins.

  3. Use a multimeter to check the sensor signal wire for continuity to ground. If the wire is shorted to ground while disconnected from the sensor, the harness is the issue. If the harness tests fine, the internal circuitry of the DEF level sensor has failed.

  4. Verify that the CAN High and CAN Low communication lines at the sensor connector have proper voltage (typically around 2.5V to 2.7V) and are not shorted.

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

    Turn off the machine and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical spikes while working on the DCU circuit.

  2. Access the Sensor

    Locate the DEF (AdBlue) tank. The DEF level sensor (often integrated into the DEF Head Unit alongside the temperature and quality sensors) is mounted at the top of the tank.

  3. Harness Repair

    If your diagnostic checks revealed a short in the wiring harness, repair the damaged section of the wire using weather-sealed heat shrink connectors, or replace the affected harness pigtail.

  4. Sensor Replacement Preparation

    If the wiring is intact, the sensor must be replaced. Disconnect the electrical connector and the DEF fluid lines attached to the head unit.

  5. Remove the Sensor

    Unscrew the retaining ring or mounting bolts securing the DEF level sensor assembly to the tank. Carefully pull the old sensor straight up and out of the tank.

  6. Install the New Sensor

    Insert the new DEF level sensor assembly. Ensure the O-ring/gasket is properly seated to prevent DEF leaks or contamination. Tighten the retaining ring/bolts to OEM torque specs.

  7. Reassembly

    Reconnect the DEF fluid lines and the electrical connector.

  8. Clear Codes

    Reconnect the battery. Turn the key to the ON position and use a diagnostic scan tool to clear the DCU 19651 / P203C fault codes. Run the machine to verify the DEF level reads accurately on the dash and the code does not return.
