New Holland EHR 4140 – EHR (Electronic Hitch/Hydraulic Remote) Controller: Rear Remote No.3 - Spool Cannot be Brought Back to Neutral
Issue description
This code indicates that the electronic hydraulic remote (EHR) system has detected that the internal spool for the third rear remote valve is failing to return to its neutral (center) position. This condition is typically caused by mechanical binding (such as debris trapped inside the valve body), a broken spool return spring, a faulty position transducer, or a failing solenoid/powerhead that is hanging up.
Applies to these machines
3 machines- New Holland T7 Series (T7.170 - T7.270)
- New Holland T8.xxx Series
- New Holland T9 Series (T9.390, T9.450, T9.505, T9.560, T9.615, T9.670)
Check the cause
Manually stroke the #3 remote valve back and forth repeatedly using the cab controls to dislodge any trapped debris causing mechanical binding.
Swap the electrical connector from the #3 remote powerhead with a known working remote (like #1 or #2) to isolate the issue. If the fault moves, suspect the wiring harness or EHR controller. If it stays, suspect mechanical binding or a failed solenoid.
Verify that the solenoid is receiving proper voltage, as low voltage can prevent the solenoid from actuating the spool fully.
Attempt to run a lever/spool calibration to rule out a loss of calibration data causing the controller to misinterpret the spool's resting position.
Repair steps
Safety Prep
Park the tractor on a level surface, turn off the engine, and relieve all hydraulic pressure. If working on an articulated tractor (like the T9 series), install the articulation cylinder locking blocks before proceeding.
Remove and Inspect
Disconnect the hydraulic lines and electrical connector to Rear Remote No. 3. Unbolt the valve section from the remote stack.
Replace Components
Replace the faulty solenoid powerhead or the entire remote valve section if the internal bore is scored.
Reassemble
Bolt the new valve section back into the stack and reconnect the hydraulic lines and electrical harness.
Perform Spool Travel Calibration
Connect the special calibration tool/harness to the quick coupler on the bank of remotes. Connect the harness end of the tool to the 6-pin Deutsch connector (e.g., connector C686M). Turn the tractor key ON and use the tractor's instrumentation display to navigate to the EHR menus. Press the DECR (decrease) key until the EHR CAL screen is displayed. Select Remote No. 3 and initiate the calibration process. Note: If the calibration fails on the first attempt, stroke the valve back and forth a few times to clear any trapped air or debris, then attempt the calibration again.
Parts you might need
(3)Calibration Harness / Special Tool
380001903Required to properly calibrate the EHR valves via the tractor display.
Electrohydraulic Rear Remote Control Valve Section
Exact OEM part numbers for the valve section vary heavily based on the tractor model, pump flow (e.g., MegaFlow vs. standard), and whether it is a 3, 4, or 5-valve stack. Must be verified against the specific machine's serial number.
EHR Valve Solenoid / Powerhead
Often sold as an assembly with the valve section on newer CNH equipment, but can sometimes be sourced individually depending on the valve manufacturer (e.g., Bosch Rexroth).
