New Holland EHR 4160 – EHR (Electro-Hydraulic Remote): Rear Remote No.5 - Under Voltage
Issue description
The control module is receiving a voltage signal from the number 5 rear electro-hydraulic remote valve (or its corresponding control circuit) that has dropped below the minimum acceptable threshold. This condition is typically caused by an open circuit, a short to ground, a loss of the 5.0V sensor reference supply, or a failed internal potentiometer within the valve's electronic head or the in-cab control switch.

Check the cause
Visually inspect the wiring harness and electrical connector at the No. 5 rear remote valve slice on the rear hydraulic stack for corrosion, moisture intrusion, bent pins, or chafed wires.
Check for the presence of the 5.0 Volt sensor supply voltage and a solid ground at the No. 5 remote valve connector.
Perform a component isolation (swap) test by swapping the electrical connector from the No. 5 remote valve to an adjacent known-good valve (such as Remote No. 4). If the fault code changes to the corresponding code for the other valve (e.g., EHR 4146), the issue is internal to the No. 5 valve slice. If the code remains EHR 4160, the issue lies in the tractor's wiring harness, the in-cab switch, or the EHR controller itself.
Test the in-cab EHR joystick or paddle switch for the No. 5 remote to ensure it is outputting the correct variable voltage and does not have an open circuit.
Repair steps
Depressurize and Power Down
Turn off the tractor, relieve all hydraulic pressure from the rear remotes, and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical spikes.
Address Wiring
If the diagnostic checks revealed a wiring fault, clean the connector with contact cleaner or repair the damaged section of the EHR harness.
Replace the In-Cab Switch
If the switch is faulty, remove the armrest/console trim panels, unplug the defective switch, and snap the new switch into place.
Replace the Remote Valve
Unbolt the No. 5 remote valve slice from the rear hydraulic valve manifold stack. Install the new electro-hydraulic remote valve slice, ensuring all O-rings are properly seated between the slices. Torque the tie-bolts to OEM specifications and reconnect the hydraulic lines and electrical connector.
Reassembly and Calibration
Reconnect the battery and power on the tractor. You must perform the EHR valve calibration procedure using the tractor's monitor or a diagnostic tool. The system needs to learn the new valve's uncalibrated spool movement limits and neutral set point (otherwise, it will throw calibration codes like EHR 4170 or 4220).
